CALL FOR PAPERS
SPECIAL SESSION ON HUMAN COMPUTATION
The 2013 International Conference on Active Media Technology (AMT2013)
October 29-31, 2013, Maebashi, Japan
Special Session URL: http://islab2.sci.ntu.edu.sg/amt2013/index.html
Conference URL: http://wi-consortium.org/conferences/amtbi13/amt/index.php/
THEME
Human computation harnesses human intelligence for solving computational problems which are difficult or beyond the power of computer programs, but are performed well by humans. The types of computations performed in systems that employ human computation have great diversity, and range from simple operations to complex ones. There are also some online markets such as Amazon Mechanical Turk in which requesters upload tasks to be performed, which are then tackled by workers who get paid for their successful completion. Games have also been introduced into human computation systems as a means to motivate and encourage participation. In essence, these games are designed to make computation tasks more interesting so that humans are motivated and willing to contribute high-quality outputs in the course of gameplay.
Human computation shares similarities with domains such as social computing, crowdsourcing and collective intelligence, albeit each with different areas of emphases. With the Internet rapidly taking on the role of a global marketplace for the exchange of ideas, experiences and knowledge, human computation is becoming widely employed, and has also drawn much interest in academia, industry and individuals. Nevertheless, there remain many challenges in human computation research. These include ascertaining quality of computations, motivating participants and sustaining usage, design and usability issues, social and behavioral concerns, as well as design and implementation issues.
This proposed session at AMT 2013 is thus timely, and will serve as a platform for those researching this human computation. Submissions may include research, system, evaluation, policy and position papers. Topics include, but are not limited to:
* Incentives and motivation in human computation
* Trust and reliability of computation outputs
* Design of human computation tasks
* Games and human computation
* Novel uses of human computation
* Domain-specific challenges
* Ascertaining expertise and reliability of participants
* Design and usability of human computation systems
* Perceptions, practices and performance of participants
* Human computation architectures
* Methods for harnessing computation outputs effectively
* Social, institutional and policy issues
* Challenges, opportunities and trends
PUBLICATION
All submitted papers to the special session will be evaluated for originality, significance, clarity, and soundness. Papers will be reviewed by at least two independent reviewers.
Accepted papers will be published by Springer as a volume of the series of Lecture Notes in Computer Science/Lecture Notes in Artificial Intelligence (LNCS/LNAI). Authors are strongly encouraged to use Springer LNCS/LNAI manuscript submission guidelines (available at http://www.springer.de/comp/lncs/authors.html) for their initial submissions (a maximum of 10 pages in Springer LNCS/LNAI style file). All papers must be submitted electronically in PDF format only, using the conference management tool athttps://wi-lab.com/cyberchair/2013/amtbi13/scripts/ws_submit.php?subarea=SA. Thereafter, select the Special Session on Human Computation.
