Post Master's Specialty in Data Curation offered at UNC at Chapel Hill
CHAPEL HILL - A new program that will assist those who wish to enhance their leadership skills in data curation is now available at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's School of Information and Library Science.
The new program is geared toward practicing professionals who are responsible for the increasingly growing area of digital or data curation. Taught by world class faculty members who include Drs. Helen Tibbo, distinguished alumni professor; Christopher (Cal) Lee, associate professor; Reagan Moore, professor and director of the Data Intensive Cyber Environment group; Arcot Rajasekar, professor and research scientist; and Jeff Pomerantz, associate professor, the program offers a leadership emphasis on policy and technology in an intensive and extensive two-year, 30 credit hour program. The program is convenient for those who are in distant locations with two weeks of immersive summer study on the Chapel Hill campus, followed by online courses. Students can tailor their individual program to fit a work-oriented project that is rooted in the real world problems of their workplaces. There is even an opportunity for students to create a team from a library and computer center.
"The Post Master's Certificate <http://sils.unc.edu/programs/post-masters-certificates> in Data Curation will help develop leaders in this area while strengthening data curation skills," said Dr. Gary Marchionini, dean and Cary C. Boshamer Distiinguished Professor. "Those who are increasingly tasked with managing digital collections and defining new processes in their organizations will benefit from the program. Classes are taught by some of the nation's best researchers who have pioneered many of the skills, methods and principals needed for data curation and big data. Students will have a unique opportunity to gain insight and leadership skills from those who created and are still creating best practices for data curation."
The two-week intensive kick-off will begin on the UNC at Chapel Hill campus during summer session (May 2013). The remainder of the program will be taught online and includes guided projects that arise from a student's work experience. The 30 credit program can be completed in two years.
