ASIS&T Special Interest Group – Information Policy (SIG IFP)

*Mission:* SIG IFP helps ensure that ASIS&T members are aware of
legislation and regulation affecting the information field and/or members
of the information professions. It provides venues which encourage research
on and discussion of current and emergent information policies as they
affect society. It will promote awareness of state/provincial, national,
and international policies of public and private entities.

*Positions/Volunteer Opportunities*: SIG IFP is currently looking for a
Social Media/Communications Officer and a webmaster. The Social Media
Officer would be responsible for overseeing communication of activities via
social media such as Facebook, Twitter, and/or LinkedIn. This extraordinary
individual would also be responsible for organizing any volunteers wishing
to be a part of the SIG’s social media campaign to engender awareness of
information policy changes to Intellectual Property, Intellectual Freedom,
Freedom of Speech and Information, Privacy, and so forth. The webmaster
would be responsible for developing an aesthetically pleasing and user
friendly website. The former website is, unfortunately, defunct. If you are
interested in either of these roles, please contact me at
sig[dot]ifp[dot]chair[at]gmail[dot]com.

*Plans for the Next Year:* In the next year, revitalization of this SIG
will include a proposal for an International panel on information policy
for the Annual conference in Montreal, Canada. If you are interested in
being a part of the panel, please send your contact information, your
information policy area/specialty and a two page abstract of your topic to
me at sig[dot]ifp[dot]chair[at]gmail[dot]com. SIG IFP is looking for
between 4-6 presenters, each from a different country, to share their
concerns, research, and/or recommendations with attendees at the next
conference.

The members of SIG IFP are interested not only in the social repercussions
of information policy but also the logistics of the legal aspects. Both
legal and social aspects are too closely intertwined to be separated and
must be considered together. Each one affects the other. As such, we
welcome collaborations between social and legal research!

Information Policy is a part of every special interest group within ASIS&T.
Records and Knowledge Managers have rules, regulations, and cumulative
knowledge to manage, international information issues teem with information
policy problems and the health care industry is subject to very detailed
laws regarding use and privacy of health information. Every aspect of our
lives, our world, is affected by information policy. We hope that you will
join this SIG and help us keep up with the information policy issues at
hand and to come. Information policy affects how we live, work, and play
and if we are not active in the discussion of issues in the field, we do
all citizens a disservice. While staying abreast of various developments,
we also hope you will share your research on your information policy topics
and collaborate with others in the group. Through educating each other, we
can address the important issues in our society and initiate the changes
necessary for a secure but productive information environment for all.

Those of us in SIG IFP look forward to collaborating with other SIGs on
information policy issues and welcome ideas and opportunities to share and
grow in this complex and interesting field.

If you are a member of SIG IFP, please make sure you have subscribed to our
mailing list at http://mail.asis.org/mailman/listinfo/sigifp-l. Remember,
the mailing lists for SIGs are OPT IN. If you do not subscribe, you will
not receive emails.

Thank you for your time and we look forward to hearing from you!
