Folks: I need to correct the date of the ASIST 75th birthday: it was actually March 13.
The reason (other than my carelessness) is that in Irene Farkas-Conn's history of ADI (From Documentation to Information Science ..., Greenwood Press, 1990) she mentions two dates: page 8 says: "On Saturday, March 13, 1937, nearly sixty delegates... gathered at the National Academy of Sciences...to discuss the organization of a documentation institute." On p. 66 she writes: The organization meeting of the American Documentation Institute took place...March 17, 1937."
Clearly, the second date is an error (probably a typo). However, to check out this apparent error I went to a 1937 calendar on the Web and discovered that March 13 was a Saturday and March 17 was a Wednesday. However, that was a month ago and when I sent the note I did not double check again and compounded the error in the book with my own error. I think the best word to describe my feelings when Jan Hatzoks corrected me is: embarrassing!
However, the correction gives me another chance to say: please help the 75th Anniversary Task Force celebrate the birthday and the 75th year by thinking of ways you can celebrate with all of us.
