Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Human Centered Design & Engineering

The Department of Human Centered Design & Engineering at the University
of Washington invites applications for a full time (100% FTE) Lecturer
or Senior Lecturer position. This will be a 9-month appointment; we
anticipate an initial 1- or 2-year appointment at the rank of Lecturer
Full-Time or a 3- to 5- year appointment at the rank of Senior Lecturer,
depending upon past experience, with a possibility of renewal. The
position includes responsibilities for teaching in our Bachelor and
Masters programs, with an emphasis on courses related to usability and
user-centered design and courses involving significant project work. The
lecturer will be responsible for teaching at least two courses per
quarter (with 3 quarters per 9-month appointment) as well as engaging in
departmental service activities. Additional funding opportunities may be
available during summer quarter.

The appointment will likely start in Autumn 2012, but possibly earlier.
The level of appointment and compensation will be commensurate with the
applicant's qualifications.
The position requires a PhD in a field related to Human Centered Design
or HCI or significant work and/or teaching experience in this area.
Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated excellence in
teaching, particularly design-oriented and studio-based teaching, as
well as experience in course development. Candidates with past
experience or background suitable for teaching design and engaging in
studio-based teaching are encouraged, and should describe that experience.

The successful candidate will join a vibrant faculty conducting
interdisciplinary research in human-computer interaction and the design
of socio-technical systems. Current faculty research includes work in
CSCW, systems theory, computer-mediated communication, ICTD, usability
studies, emerging communication technologies, and engineering education.
The department is the home of the award-winning Laboratory for Usability
Testing and Evaluation, and faculty regularly collaborate with
colleagues in Computer Science and Engineering, the Information School,
the School of Art, and the Center for Engineering Learning and Teaching.
The faculty also routinely engage in research projects with affiliates
from the region’s noted high-tech industry. Seattle is home to many
prominent technology companies, along with a robust startup and global
health community.

The University of Washington is building a culturally diverse faculty
and strongly encourages applications from women and minority candidates.
The University is an affirmative action, equal opportunity employer. The
University of Washington, a recipient of the 2006 Alfred P. Sloan award
for Faculty Career Flexibility, is committed to supporting the work-life
balance of its faculty. University of Washington faculty engage in
teaching, research, and service.

Review of applications will begin March 1, 2012. To apply, send (1) a
letter of application, (2) current CV, (3) statement of teaching goals,
and (4) complete contact information for three references. Teaching
portfolios (electronic or paper) are welcome but not required. Materials
should be addressed to Dr. Jennifer Turns, Lecturer Search Committee
