Subject: Proposed changes to human subjects protection rules - please sign
our letter and comment

Dear colleagues,
I'm writing to ask you, as a member of the HCI community, to comment on and
sign a letter responding to proposed changes in the human subject protection
rules for research. The URL of our draft letter and a link to the full
proposal are at:
http://goo.gl/N3zCG (please respond by Oct 5)
Background: The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is proposing
to make changes to the rules for human subjects research. We (an informal
group of HCI researchers) have developed a letter to support the many
positive elements of the proposal. This letter focuses on issues that are
likely to affect most HCI research: The proposed "Excused" research
category, changes to the "Expedited Review" category, changes to the
informed consent rules, and new rules about data security and information
protection. We hope to gather a number of signatures from the HCI community
to ensure that our voices are heard as they move forward.
In addition to signing the letter, I encourage you to provide your own
comments through their response page. Please pass this along to others that
may be interested, too.
Thanks for considering this,
Bill

I would prefer it go to all ASIST members, but if someone objects to
broadcasting that widely, we could limit to the two sigs

So do you want to post this to ASIS-L and/or individual SIG lists? I agree
that this is an issue relevnat to researchers in ASIST. Our Vice Chancellor
for Research at UIUC is actively seeking input to forward on these issues
and I imagine that is true on many university campuses.

Linda, Bill Kules wonders whether ASIST is willing to encourage members to
support the letter to HHS on IRB changes. I have signed as an individual
researcher and have encouraged my faculty to consider signing. This needs
to be done in the coming week so perhaps a message to ASIST listserv asking
people to read it would be in order. I suppose sending only to HCI and USE
SIGS might be an alternative.
Best,
Gary

Hi Gary,

If you could put me in touch with Linda that would be helpful. I've attached
an email that I'm sending around. Feel free to pass it along to anyone who
you think would be interested.

Thanks,
Bill
