In collaboration with the University of Koblenz-Landau, GESIS - Leibniz Institute for the Social Sciences wishes to appoint a
Scientific Director of the "Specialized Information for the Social Sciences" Department
to start as soon as possible. The post shall initially be filled for a term of five years. The successful candidate shall also be appointed to a
University Chair (W3)
in the "Institut für Wirtschafts- und Verwaltungsinformatik" [Institute for Information Systems Research] in the Fachbereich Informatik [Computer Science Faculty] at the University of Koblenz-Landau for the same period.
The details of the post shall be agreed upon between the parties. The place of work as departmental head shall be Cologne. Two teaching hours per week at the University shall be required during the semester for the duration of the appointment. Criteria governing the appointment to the chair at the University of Koblenz-Landau are based on the provisions of the Hochschulgesetz des Landes Rheinland-Pfalz [Regulations for Higher Education Establishments Rhineland-Palatinate].
GESIS - Leibniz-Institute for the Social Sciences (www.gesis.org) provides research services for the field of social sciences. On the basis of its research, it develops and improves analytical approaches and research tools in the social sciences. The core tasks of the "Specialized Information for the Social Sciences" department are structured recording of knowledge production in social sciences in Germany, providing this data to the specialist communities concerned and carrying out the corresponding research and development. The "Institut für Wirtschafts- und Verwaltungsinformatik" specialises in methods and techniques to support the draft, implementation and use of information and communication systems. The post should therefore form a link between the social sciences and informatics.
The scientific director will be responsible for managing a multi-disciplinary team. He/She is also expected to carry out his/her own excellent research. The research focus of the position is information science and information systems and their links to the social sciences and the core areas of scientific information: knowledge production and acquisition, science monitoring, bibliometrics, scientometrics and incentive and feedback mechanisms (to improve involvement of the specialist community). Familiarity with empirical methods from the field of social sciences is desirable.
Candidates should be internationally established information scientists, computer scientists or social scientists. Experience in research infrastructures would be a great advantage. They should also be able to prove past success in obtaining external funding from national and international funding programmes. Experience of management and organisational processes and international collaborations is essential.
