The University of South Florida School of Information seeks a full-time Instructor to contribute to the growth and evolution of the B.S. in Information Studies.

University of South Florida
The University of South Florida (USF) is a high-impact, global research university dedicated to student success. USF is classified by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching in the top tier of research universities, a distinction attained by only 2.2 percent of all universities. It is ranked 44th in total research expenditures and 34th in federal research expenditures for public universities by the National Science Foundation. The USF System has an annual budget of $1.5 billion, an annual economic impact of $3.7 billion, and serves 47,000 students in Tampa, St. Petersburg, Sarasota-Manatee and Lakeland.

The USF School of Information (SI) is housed in the College of Arts and Sciences, which consists of 23 academic departments and 22 centers and institutes that are highly collaborative and interdisciplinary in nature. SI has enjoyed a strong tradition that has primarily focused on the education of information professionals in a variety of settings (particularly libraries and related information agencies) for several decades. The School continues to evolve and grow, most recently with its Bachelor of Science in Information Studies program, which began as part of SI in Fall 2010. This program integrates a strong foundation in information technology as well as an understanding of human, organizational, policy and other issues. While the degree necessarily provides students with in-depth technical knowledge and skills, emphasis is given to understanding how people interact with information and technology and other complexities of the information society. The School also has an ALA-accredited Master's degree (with nearly 350 graduate students).

The position is at the full-time Instructor level, with opportunities to move up in the newly approved instructor career path (which generally parallels that of tenure track faculty, yet with a focus on instruction and related duties). Appointments are nine-month, beginning as early as possible, with summer teaching opportunities typically available. It is required to have a minimum 4/4 teaching load without a research assignment. The pay is competitive with similar instructor positions nationally, and USF offers an impressive benefits package.

Successful candidates will be those who are committed to teaching a variety of courses in areas supporting the Undergraduate Program in Information Studies, particularly in the core curriculum, and should have a solid grounding in Information Studies. This position also requires academic and professional advising of new and current students, other administrative support for the program, and to be an active member of the School and College.

The following are the required and preferred qualifications of potential candidates:
Required:

 1. They must possess (or be at the ABD level) a doctoral degree in Information Studies or a closely-related field.
 2. They must show evidence of being able to contribute to the core curriculum of the B.S. in Information Studies program, supporting the overall mission and direction of that program.
 3. Ability to make extensive use of innovative distance learning technologies to support their teaching.
 4. Show evidence that they are able to advise undergraduate students, as well as help in the overall administration of the program (course scheduling, curriculum development, marketing, etc.)
Preferred:

 1. Successful candidates should have a solid grounding in Information Studies, particularly as this applies to the way theories and practice in our field are manifest in our undergraduate degree program. These are articulated in our major courses, and include such areas as information architecture, information behaviors, interaction design, etc.
 2. Additionally, some candidates may have particular interests in contexts such as health informatics, digital media, e-commerce, etc. This will help the program to focus the degree into "tracks" or emphasis areas.
