WHAT: Online Open House: Semantic Analysis Methods - No Programming Experience Required!

WHO: Dr. Denise Bedford, Goodyear Professor of Knowledge Management at Kent State University

WHEN: Wednesday, August 3 at noon

WHERE: Email iakm at kent.edu to register for the open house.  This open house will be run on WebEx and you will be invited to the presentation upon request.

WHAT ELSE: With the proliferation of unstructured data, semantic applications have moved out of the laboratory and into enterprise work environments.  21st century knowledge organizations are learning that semantic technologies can be designed, configured and implemented to support a wide range of business processes.  Semantic and knowledge technologies are fields where jobs and career opportunities are growing exponentially because they also provide critical building blocks for the semantic web and semantic services.

Today's semantic technologies, also known as text analytics, are smart, applying rigorous natural language processing (NLP) methods to model human decision-making processes.  Semantic technologies involve the processing of recorded human knowledge in a meaningful way - in other words, in a way that represents how people think.  These technologies use several different methods, including concept extraction, rule-based classification, dynamic classification, guided summarization and cross-language translation.

While these technologies may sound somewhat intimidating, they're not.  Products have advanced to the point where you don't need to understand programming in order to design and implement a semantic solution.  In fact, a background in information science, knowledge management and linguistics - and an understanding of the problem from a human perspective, are the most important criteria for success.  The open house will discuss some case studies from completed and in-progress projects, and talk about the learning and practical experience opportunities provided by the new online Semantic Analysis Methods course offered by Kent State University this fall.
