Post Doctoral Researcher: School of Information Sciences, College of
Communication and Information, University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Full
Time, 12 months. Renewable up to four years. Applications will be
accepted starting immediately and until position is filled. Starting
date: August 1, 2010.
To address the growing environmental, social, and technological
challenges facing the world, scientists, educators, librarians, resource
managers, and the public need open, persistent, robust, and secure
access to well-described and easily discovered data about the Earth's
ecosystems. DataONE is designed to provide the distributed framework,
sound management, and reliable technologies which enable the long-term
preservation of diverse and complex multi-scale, multi-discipline, and
multi-national science data.
The Post-Doctoral researcher will be part of the NSF-funded DataONE
project and will work with UT School of Information Sciences faculty,
Oak Ridge National Laboratory researchers, and interdisciplinary teams
of communication and information researchers, life scientists, computer
scientists, librarians and others who are studying the user experience
in working with data, text, and other forms of information. The post doc
will participate in team efforts, particularly in the areas of
assessment and socio-cultural issues. The researcher will be
responsible for baseline and ongoing assessment of scientists' data and
information needs, including data gathering, statistical analysis, and
report writing. The researcher will design and implement research
projects, assist other researchers with the design and implementation of
their user-based projects, and supervise all aspects of needs assessment
and a user experience laboratory. Some administrative duties and
logistical support tasks will be required. Some travel will be required.
Under the supervision of Professors Carol Tenopir and Suzie Allard, this
Post-Doctoral researcher will play a major role in the on-going
assessment and usability testing for DataONE at the University of
Tennessee, School of Information Sciences and will supervise user
testing and the user experience laboratory in the University of
Tennessee, College of Communication and Information.
REQUIRED: PhD completed or near completion in Information Science,
Library Science, Communication, Earth/Environmental Science, or
equivalent. Interest in and experience with both quantitative and
qualitative social science research methods and statistical data
analysis. Expertise in statistical methods. Strong oral and written
communication skills.
DESIRED: Experience with survey methods, usability testing, user
experience testing, and bibliometrics. Interest or experience in earth
or environmental sciences is helpful.
SALARY: $45,000 per year plus benefits.
