University of South Florida
School of Library and Information Science
Two Instructor Positions in the B.S. in Information Technology Program
Closing Date:  Open until filled

University of South Florida
Located on Florida's beautiful Suncoast, the University of South Florida is among the nation's top 63 public research universities, is one of 39 community-engaged public universities as designated by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, and placed among the nation's top 20 "up and coming universities" in the 2009 U.S. News & World Report annual college rankings. USF is one of Florida's top three research universities. USF was awarded $366 million in research contracts and grants last year. The university offers 219 degree programs at the undergraduate, graduate, specialist and doctoral levels, including the MD degree. The university has a $1.8 billion annual budget, an annual economic impact of $3.2 billion, and serves more than 46,000 students on institutions/campuses in Tampa, St. Petersburg, Sarasota-Manatee and Lakeland. USF is a member of the Big East Athletic Conference.

USF SLIS is housed in the College of Arts and Sciences, which consists of 24 units that are highly collaborative and interdisciplinary in nature.  SLIS has enjoyed a strong tradition that has primarily focused on the education of information professionals in a variety of settings (particularly libraries and related information agencies) for several decades. The School continues to evolve and grow, most recently with its Bachelor of Science in Information Technology degree, which will officially begin as part of SLIS in Fall 2010. This degree is meant to enable students to develop not only the depth of technical expertise required to become tomorrow's leaders in a variety of organizations and environments, but also give them a deeper understanding of the organizational and social issues surrounding people and their interactions with systems and information services.  The School also has an ALA-accredited Master's degree (with nearly 400 graduate students), and is pursuing an interdisciplinary PhD program.

USF SLIS seeks exceptional faculty to contribute to the growth and evolution of the B.S. in Information Technology toward one that will ultimately help serve the emerging knowledge economy in Florida and across the globe. The positions are at the full-time Instructor level, with opportunities to move up in the newly approved instructor career path (which generally parallels that of tenure track faculty, yet with a focus on instruction and related duties). Appointments are nine-month, beginning no later than August 2010, with summer teaching opportunities typically available.  The pay is competitive with similar instructor positions nationally, and USF offers an impressive benefits package.

Successful candidates will be those who are committed to teaching a variety of courses in areas supporting the B.S. in Information Technology, particularly in the core curriculum. While the core is heavily focused on key areas of IT, these are taught at a level appropriate more to IT students' needs rather than those in computer science or management information systems.  That being said, demonstrated teaching expertise should therefore include several from the following: object-oriented programming, data structures and algorithms, database management systems, systems analysis and design, IT ethics, and special topics related to information system design, analysis, history and social issues, etc.  This position also requires academic and professional advising of new and current students, other administrative support for the program, and to be active members of the School and College.
The following are the required and preferred qualifications of potential candidates:
Required:
* Ph.D. in Information Technology, Information Science, or a related discipline. Degree must be completed by the appointment date, or a letter from an advisor stating that the degree when the degree will be conferred.
* Record of exceptional teaching, or compelling evidence of great potential to ensure the success of students.
* Demonstrated ability to teach several courses in the BS in IT core curriculum.
* Ability to provide academic and professional advising for students
* Ability and desire to teach online and otherwise support the distance learning needs of students.
Preferred:
* Evidence of relevant professional experience.
* Understanding of broader issues related to the intersection of information technology and information science.
* Willingness to collaborate with other programs across campus.
