PROGRAM AVAILABLE ON THE NEW NFAIS WEBSITE
The 2010 NFAIS Annual Conference, Redefining the Value of
Information: Exploring the New Equation, is scheduled to take place
February 28 - March 2, 2010 at the Hyatt at the Bellevue in
Philadelphia, PA. The preliminary program and registration
information are available on the new NFAIS website along with the
conference press release, hotel information/directions, and
information on Philadelphia (go to: http://www.nfais.org/page/23-
2010-annual-conference.
Opening with a keynote presentation by Clay Shirky, Internet guru
and author of Here Comes Everybody: The Power of Organizing Without
Organizations, the conference will take a look at the measures
information seekers currently use to define information value and
why these measures are important to them. For while credibility,
authority, and quality remain key factors, information and
technology are now inseparable. As a result, new criteria for
defining the value of information products and services have entered
the equation.
You will learn what users really want from a survey taken by
Outsell, Inc. as well as directly from a panel of users themselves.
You will hear about products and services that librarians and
content providers are now offering as they, too, begin to focus on
the new measures of value such as mobile computing and tools that
foster collaborative research. You will learn how innovative content
providers are taking a fresh look at their content and emerging
technologies in order to create even greater value for users. And
you will hear more about some of the key issues that are reshaping
scholarly communication and user perceptions of the value of
information, such as open content, the emergence of online scholarly
communities of interest with their own ?authoritative? content, and
debates over the value of authoritative, credible content. Of
special interest will be a session on how content providers
themselves should measure value, highlighting three case studies
that will help as your organization explores the new information
value equation.
Our closing keynote speaker, John Willbanks, Vice President of
Science at the Creative Commons, will provide a glimpse of what the
information products and services of the future will look like if
the information value equation is significantly transformed by such
issues as open content, an increase in global collaborative research
and online communities of interest, the current perceived value of
free versus fee-based content, etc. And he will provide some
insights on what publishers and librarians need to do in order to be
the providers of ultimate value to future generations of scholars
and researchers.
Attend the 52nd NFAIS Annual Conference to hear about some of the
approaches being taken to redefine the value of information and to
interact with industry experts who are already grappling with this
critical issue. No matter what role you play in the information
community - content or technology provider, librarian, information
professional, or educator - join us and learn how to raise the user
perception of value for your information products and services.
