Post-Integrated Library Systems? - The Open Library
Environment(OLE)and the Unified Resource Management(URM)Projects.'
ALA Annual LITA Next Generation Catalog Interest Group Meeting

Monday, July 13, 2009 (3:30-5:30pm) in Chicago, IL
Palmer House - Chicago Room

The session presents two projects that are on the cutting-edge of
"redefining" the ILS.

The Open Library Environment (OLE) Project
With support from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, a multinational
group of libraries is developing the design for an Open Library
Environment (OLE), an alternative to the current model of an
Integrated Library System. The goal is to produce a design document
to inform open source library system development efforts, to guide
future library system implementations, and to influence current
Integrated Library System vendor products.

Carlen Ruschoff, Director of Information Technology & Technical
Services, University of Maryland, College Park, and Peter Murray,
Assistant Director, New Service Development OhioLINK: the Ohio
Library and Information Network.

Ex Libris' Unified Resource Management (URM) Project

Oren Beit-Arie and Susan M. Stearns discuss the Unified Resource
Management [URM], Ex Libris' next-generation framework for library
management services. As today's libraries face a time of major
change, a new approach to library services is needed. Ex Libris is
responding to this need with a completely new design for next gen
services. We will provide an overview of URM and touch on some of
the ways that new tools for collaboration and community in
combination with streamlined workflows can facilitate the evolution
of traditional technical services to better support learning and research.

Oren Beit-Arie, the Chief Strategy Officer of Ex Libris, and Susan M.
Stearns, Vice President of Strategic Partnerships of Ex Libris.
