Acting Dean of School of Library and Information Science Named
Washington, DC - Very Rev. David M. O'Connell, C.M., the president of The
Catholic University of America, announced today that he has appointed
Professor Ingrid Hsieh-Yee acting dean of the School of Library and
Information Science.
Hsieh-Yee joined the library and information science faculty as an assistant
professor in 1990. She became an associate professor in 1996 and ordinary
professor in 2004.
She received a bachelor's degree in foreign languages and literature from
National Taiwan University, master's degrees in comparative literature and
library and information studies from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and
a doctorate in library and information studies, also from the University of
Wisconsin-Madison.
"I am delighted that Professor Hsieh-Yee has agreed to assume this
responsibility because it ensures the stability and consistency of
leadership as the school progresses toward innovative programming and a
rigorous research agenda," says Provost James Brennan.
Hsieh-Yee's research and teaching interests include organization of
information, metadata, digital collections, information architecture,
library and information science education, information needs and behaviors,
human computer interaction, knowledge management and research methods.
She has published numerous articles and books, including two editions of
Organizing Audiovisual and Electronic Resources for Access and the National
Information Standards Organization document "Framework of Guidance for
Building Good Digital Collections."
She won research awards from the American Society for Information Science
and Technology and the Association for Library and Information Science
Education, and won best paper awards for her articles in the Journal of the
American Society for Information Science and Technology and OCLC Systems and
Services. She was on the editorial board of Library Quarterly from 2003 to
2008 and serves on the editorial board of the Chinese American Librarians
Association's Occasional Papers Series. At CUA she chairs the Scholarly
Communication Project Team that is building an institutional repository for
the university community.
Hseih-Yee is also an active member of the American Society for Information
Science and Technology and the Association for Library and Information
Science Education. She was named American Society for Information Science
and Technology SIG Member of the Year in 2009 and elected to its nomination
committee in 2009.
Before coming to Catholic University, Hsieh-Yee was a cataloger at the
Health Services Library at University of Wisconsin-Madison, as well as
teaching assistant and lecturer at the same university. She also was a
cataloger at the Department of Legislative Reference Library in Annapolis,
Md.
Kimberly Kelley, the current dean of CUA's School of Library and Information
Science, is stepping down at the end of the fall semester.
