Natural Language Processing Analyst at the Marine Biological Laboratory

The MBLWHOI Library at the Marine Biological Laboratory seeks applications
for highly motivated informatics specialists to join a growing team of
developers and informaticians focusing on the biology of aging. Join a
community of researchers that are internationally recognized as defining the
current trends and practices in marine information sciences and biological
informatics.
Responsibilities:
Develop Natural Language Processing (NLP) tools and RESTFUL web services
Architect applications and web services using Java, Ruby, Rails
Architect and develop data pipelines to integrate information from a range
of data sources including, but not limited to: genomics, phenomics,
biodiversity, demography, consumer health, and clinical research databases.
Collaborate with the biodiversity informatics group of the Encyclopedia of
Life initiative, which is also located at the Marine Biological Laboratory.
Report to the Project Director for the Ellison Medical Foundation (EMF)
funded initiative at the Marine Biological Laboratory to study the biology
of aging across the spectrum of life.
Education/Experience:
Required:
Masters degree in Bioinformatics or comparable experience
Formal training in biological science (e.g., molecular biology,
biochemistry, biophysics)
Demonstrable experience with database management systems (such as MySQL or
PostgreSQL) and programming (e.g., Perl, PHP, Ruby, C/C++, and Java)
Understanding of Semantic Web concepts, such as: RDF, OWL, Inference
Engines, URIs
Significant Experience implementing efficient algorithms in areas such as:
Search engine query processing and/or index construction
Inference algorithms, Logic Algorithms
Machine Learning / Statistical Methods
Graph Theory Algorithms
Natural Language Processing algorithms, such as Entity Extraction
Preferred:
Experience developing in a Mac OS X or Linux environment
Experience in open source technologies is required and individuals who have
participated in or contributed to the development of open source projects
will be given higher consideration
