Dear all,

The Graduate School of Library and Information Science (GSLIS) at Simmons
College proudly announces the opening of its Usability Lab. The official
opening ceremony will be held on September 15, 2008. Dr. Gary Marchionini,
Cary C. Boshamer Professor in the School of Information and Library Science
at the University of North Carolina will be coming to GSLIS to open the
Usability Lab. Dr. Marchionini teaches courses in human-information
interaction, interface design and testing, and digital libraries. He heads
the Interaction Design Laboratory at SILS.

Simmons GSLIS Usability Lab <http://gslis.simmons.edu/usability/> is an
innovative, state-of-the practice usability testing facility to provide
faculty and students with a testing environment to support user-centered
curricula. In the Usability Lab, faculty and students conduct user studies
and usability testing/evaluation of specialized computer software, web
interfaces, and library information systems. The current GSLIS curriculum
has a number of courses that center on user information seeking behavior and
the principles of information systems design and evaluation. In addition to
improving and enhancing the student research experience in these GSLIS
courses, the Usability Lab gives GSLIS faculty opportunities to develop new
courses and initiate cross-discipline collaborative course offering with
departments such as psychology, communication, education, and computer
science. Finally, the Lab will be useful for testing, implementing, and
extending new initiatives in blended learning across campus.

GSLIS Usability Lab is funded by
<http://my.simmons.edu/services/technology/ptrc/> Pottruck Technology
Faculty Fellowship grant, in partnership with the Graduate School of Library
and Information Science at Simmons College.

The official ribbon-cutting of the Lab will take place at 2pm on
9/15/08. That evening, Dr. Marchionini will give a talk entitled
"Understanding Human Information Interaction". The evening event is
co-hosted by the Student Chapter of ASIST at Simmons and the New England
ASIST Chapter. Detailed information regarding the talk and registration form
is available through the following link:
