As we digitize more and more of our collections and records, and continue to
amass large quantities of born-digital resources, we face a critical
challenge:  how do we maintain access to all of these materials in the face
of rapid hardware and software obsolescence, and other technological, legal,
and economic barriers to preservation. This presentation will help you
understand the critical problems of digital preservation, identify the risks
to your digital collections, and begin to devise short- and long-term
strategies for keeping your collections accessible into the future.

Karen F. Gracy is an Assistant Professor in the School of Library and
Information Science at Kent State University.  She teaches coursework in the
area of digital preservation and archiving.  She is the author of Film
Preservation:  Competing Definitions of Value, Use, and Practice, an
ethnographic study of the moving image archiving community, which was
published by the Society of American Archivists in 2007.

There are three banks of elevators, people should take the 12 - 17 bank of
elevators to the 15th floor. We will meet everyone at the 15th floor and
escort them to the conference room. We will be there from 5:45 - 6:30 so
anyone arriving after 6:30 will need to call Ed Dale on  cell -
216-965-1199. If someone is not in the elevator lobby, please wait a moment
until the escort arrives.

The Huntington Bank Parking lot costs $5 after 3:00 on normal nights. It is
connected to the E&Y office by an underground walkway. The address of the
parking lot is 947 Chester Ave. One note if you are using Google maps,
Euclid Ave. is under construction. Traffic is one way only and that is
eastbound. If possible, come to downtown Cleveland on Route 2 (Shoreway),
exit at East 9th, turn left onto Chester and then park. That way you avoid
the Euclid construction where it crosses East 9th. For everyone coming from
Kent - Take Route 43 to I-480 to I-77 to East 9th, then turn right on to
Chester. Or you could take the Ohio Turnpike to I-77 to East 9th, if you
prefer. That will mean moving through the construction but it cannot be
helped. 


To get to the E&Y building from the Huntington parking lot, take the
elevator to the basement. Turn right out of the elevator. Walk through the
tunnel. then through the revolving door, across the mall and up the
escalator. It is all a straight shot from the elevator, just giving
landmarks so people will know they are on the right path. Now use the
elevator marked 12 -17 to go to the 15th floor. It is all covered and
connected, so it will keep you out of the weather.

Another parking option is the Statler parking garage,  only $3.25 after 5,
but it is on Euclid Ave. If you are coming from the south, take East 9th to
Euclid and turn right, or eastward . The Statler garage is just before the
next light on the left side. To get to E & Y from the Statler, walk out to
Euclid, turn right towards East 9th. The office is the nice building at 925
Euclid with the brass revolving doors.
