Why Attend?
On January 9, 2007 the Library of Congress issued a report on the future
of bibliographic control in the 21st century, a future that is
envisioned as ".collaborative, decentralized, international in scope,
and Web-based." It is a call to action to all those involved in
information access and retrieval to re-evaluate the traditional
practices and procedures used in bibliographic control. The ultimate
outcome of the Library of Congress' call to action can have a
significant impact on how librarians go about their daily business and
how publishers and abstracting and indexing services produce and
disseminate their products and services. Even the concept of journals
and issues is up for debate in today's digital environment! All
information providers - creators, publishers, aggregators and librarians
- need to understand the issues and have a voice in the discussion.
Who Should Attend?
If you are responsible for monitoring any of the following issues -
emerging new forms of bibliographic control; the incorporation of
user-generated content to enrich bibliographic services; collaboration
between librarians and content providers to create and share
bibliographic data; the impact of digital article-by-article publishing
on library acquisitions and cataloging as well as on the production of
traditional abstracting and indexing services; and the opportunities
that the future holds for the traditional players in bibliographic
control - this meeting is for you.
Agenda
Deanna Marcum, Associate Librarian for Library Services, Library of
Congress, will open the meeting with an overview of the recent report
issued by the Library of congress on the future of bibliographic control
and a panel of information community members will give their reaction to
the Library's recommendations. OCLC will discuss their next generation
cataloging and metadata service that is a collaborative venture between
publishers, vendors and libraries. And you will learn more about how
user-generated content can enrich bibliographic information from those
who are already engaging the user community. The program will also look
at how the challenges in providing bibliographic information in today's
hybrid environment (multiple versions of a document, new forms of
content (wikis, blogs, etc.) are being handled, and will conclude with a
look at challenges and opportunities that the future holds for all who
are committed to securing the long-term access and retrieval of
scholarly information.
Come and join your peers for an enjoyable and fact-filled day that will
provide information essential to your organization, and provide you with
an opportunity for networking within the Information Community.
