Taxonomist/Senior Vocabulary Development Specialist Needed for the
PsycINFO Division of the American Psychological Association
PsycINFO is recruiting an experienced taxonomist with a background in
psychology or the behavioral sciences. The Senior Vocabulary Specialist
manages the controlled vocabulary for PsycINFO and APA's full-text
databases and new products, collaborating with internal staff and
outside subject matter experts. This individual will also be involved in
developing the taxonomy for the APA web site. The candidate must have
experience with ontologies, thesaurus software tools such as MultiTES,
and database production systems. Strong communication skills are a plus.
Required Qualifications:
* Bachelor's degree in Psychology or closely related social
science with psychology coursework or knowledge; strong research
background
* Knowledge of relational databases and how they work
* Indexing and classification skills. Familiarity with Thesaurus
maintenance procedures and policies, and construction or development
standards. Experience managing complex editorial projects is required.
* Strong skills using MS Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook
* Excellent searching and investigative skills,
* Knowledge of MultiTES or other types of thesaurus maintenance
software
* Strong initiative and the ability to coordinate multiple
projects, while remaining flexible and open to changing priorities
* Excellent oral and written communications skills; ability to do
offsite presentations at conferences
* Strong team-leading skills
* Excellent attention to detail
* Ability to train others
Description:
* Direct and supervise all product development and editorial
activities associated with the development and research of new
psychological index terminology, hierarchy construction, check tag
revisions, scope note writing/editing, and the design of new features;
manages the progress of these activities, and ensures that tasks are
successfully accomplished in a timely manner
* Serve as resource and in-house authority to management staff
regarding new developments in the vocabulary field, production staff
regarding new terms and thesaurus matters; provide training regarding
Thesaurus and related products for staff and customers
* Collaborate with management to identify new areas of vocabulary
development that enhance customer usage of PsycINFO and
PsycINFO-databases and increase licensing revenues. Provide product
management oversight for new areas of vocabulary development, managing
life cycle processes, maintenance and hierarchy construction processes
* Collaborate with other members of Customer Relations to
accomplish goals in the areas of customer relations and quality
assurance as necessary
* Serve as liaison to Product Development and Systems staff
regarding Thesaurus maintenance and changes. Work with Internet
Services and Systems on the Thesaurus utility for the PsycINFO database
via the Web, and serve as point person and liaison for Thesaurus
maintenance software
* Oversee editorial and print production of printed Thesaurus.
Consult with Marketing in preparation of promotional materials to
support Thesaurus sales including press releases, brochures, etc.
