Human-Computer Interaction (SIG HCI),ASIS&T

*Human Computer Interaction in Information Intensive Environments*
*A Focus on Groups and Collaborative Information Use*

This symposium will focus on the challenges of group and collaborative  
use of information systems. How do groups of two or more members  
access and use information, and what technologies best support these  
activities? While social computing has emerged as a phenomenon among  
distributed communities, we have yet to fully understand computing at  
the group level, whether face-to-face, or in distributed environments;  
synchronous or asynchronous. The following specific questions will be  
discussed; however, we are seeking a wide range of perspectives on the  
topic:

§ How do groups use highly interactive computing technologies to  
access and use information?
§ What kinds of social interfaces provide the best support for  
information interaction within groups?
§ What is the role of sociability in information access and use?
§ How do we study and evaluate highly interactive computing  
technologies for groups?
§ Is usability the best paradigm for assessment of information systems  
and interfaces to support group interaction?

The symposium will include a panel of experts who will discuss the  
challenges pertinent to group-based access to and use of information,  
a series of research paper presentations and a poster session. The  
symposium will end with an award presentation for the best poster and  
best paper, and a lunch. We have planned for an extended break and a  
lunch for participants to talk with one another, share insights, and  
perhaps hatch new collaborations and adventures.

*Submissions are welcome in two categories:*

1. Research papers: 3-4 pages (1,500-2,000 words)
2. Research posters: 1.5-2 pages (750-1,000) words

In both categories submissions should describe results from completed  
or ongoing research projects related to the symposium topic.  
Submissions should be emailed to hci at dal.ca <mailto:hci at dal.ca> by  
August 18, 2008; applicants will be notified by September 5th.
