[Asis-l] UW-Milwaukee New PhD Program, Now Accepting Applications

The School of Information Studies (SOIS) at the University of
Wisconsin-Milwaukee is pleased to announce that it is now accepting
applications for fall of 2008 for its recently approved PhD program in
Information Studies.

This program is a unique research degree that provides the opportunity for
students to develop and apply expertise in Information Studies to a variety of
research areas. Building on one of the largest and most varied MLIS programs in
the country, as well as a Bachelor of Science program in Information Resources,
the PhD program will prepare researchers, educators, and administrators with
specializations in three major areas:

•	Information Policy
•	Information Retrieval
•	Organization of Information

The SOIS faculty are recognized for their research productivity
(http://www.uwm.edu/Dept/SOIS/about/research/index.html), ranking in the top
five nationally in per capita publications in a recent study (Adkins & Budd,
2007). The School also has established agreements and collaborations with a
number of institutions around the world. SOIS is home to the Center for
Information Policy Research (CIPR), which facilitates information policy
research through its lecture series, research paper series, outreach
activities, and its information ethics fellows program. The School also houses
an Information Intelligence & Architecture Research Lab. This state of the art
facility for faculty and students serves as a hub for research on information
analysis, system design & evaluation, digital libraries, data mining, and
usability studies. The lab houses high-end workstations, supercomputers,
high-speed networking access, digital video equipment, and participant
observation facilities.

Full-time doctoral students are eligible for graduate assistantships, tuition
scholarships, and adjunct teaching opportunities.
