The Wayne State University Library & Information Program is looking for a
new Director and welcomes nominations and applications for the position. The
complete posting is included below. Dr. Ronald Powell (ad5328 at wayne.edu) and
Dr. Robert Holley (aa3805 at wayne.edu) are co-chairs of the Search Committee
and welcome any questions about the position. Dr. Hermina Anghelescu, member
of the Search Committee, and Dr. Holley will be attending ALISE where they
hope to speak with those interested in applying for the position or in
nominating a colleague.
 
Wayne State University is seeking the nominations and applications for the
position of Director, Library Information Science Program.  The Director
will provide strategic and administrative leadership to a growing graduate
program, work with faculty to set curriculum directions, pursue and
encourage the innovative use of technology in teaching and learning, enhance
activities for distance education, support outreach activities in a vibrant
urban community and foster teaching excellence and faculty research. The
Program offers an ALA accredited master’s degree program in library and
information science (MLIS) as well as certificates of advanced study. The
Program has over 550 students on campus, at three off-campus sites, and in
Web-based instruction. Planning is underway for creating a doctoral
program.  As a partner in two Institute of Museum and Library Services
(IMLS) grants, the LIS Program is engaged in preparing future librarians for
the digital age.  Located in the beautiful educational and cultural center
of Detroit, Wayne State University is a research university with a strong
urban commitment and is attended by 33,000 full and part-time students. 
 
RESPONSIBILITIES: The director oversees the management of the Program,
guides its strategic planning; seeks to enhance and manage its resources;
provides leadership in outreach efforts; provides student services, fosters
teaching excellence and research, and encourages interdisciplinary
activities; and teach at least one course per academic year in either the
fall or winter semesters. The director reports to the dean of the University
Library System.
 
QUALIFICATIONS: Earned doctorate and extensive record of scholarly
achievement in LIS or a related field; evidence of excellent teaching
skills; significant involvement in graduate education with qualifications
for tenure at the rank of full or associate professor; a strong commitment
to teaching excellence in the Program; demonstrated administrative
experience; demonstrated commitment to shared governance; ability to advance
the Program through fundraising; knowledge of higher education trends; and
an appreciation for the service role of an urban institution.
 
THE CAMPUS AND UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES: Wayne State University is located in
the heart of Detroit’s University Cultural Center, the home of renowned
museums, galleries and theatres, most within walking distance. The WSU main
campus encompasses 203 acres of beautifully landscaped walkways and
gathering spots, linking 100 education and research buildings. The
