The University of California, Riverside Libraries seeks an experienced,
innovative, and service-oriented individual to lead the Libraries'
Acquisitions Department. The
UCR Libraries is a member of ARL. The UCR Libraries is comprised of five
facilities housing more than 2,000,000 volumes, 28,000 print and electronic
serials and 1,700,000 microformats; and providing access to more than 258
databases. The successful candidate will join an enthusiastic staff of 39
FTE librarians and 124 support personnel in continuing to build and make
available research collections of excellence within an expanding and diverse
university.
Responsibilities: Reporting to the AUL for Collections and Scholarly
Communications, the Head of Acquisitions assumes responsibility for the
overall management of the Acquisitions Department currently with one
librarian and 15 support staff.
. Provides expert leadership and guidance for all acquisitions activities
which include ordering, receiving, fund accounting, invoicing, claiming,
approval processing, serials receipt and check-in, and gift processing.
. Oversees the successful acquisition of materials in all formats, including
electronic resources working within an annual budget of $5.2 million.
. Organizes and directs the workflow of the department to accomplish its
mission, tasks, and goals.
. Maintains and evaluates vendor relationships, vendor performance and
innovation, and cost data to guide acquisitions processes and to determine
impact.
. Maintains up-to-date knowledge of publishing trends.
. Works collaboratively with the heads of the Cataloging/Metadata Services
and Collection Development departments and the AUL for Collections and
Scholarly Communications to set priorities, allocate resources, conduct
analyses, and in general oversee and plan for efficient workflow and
integration of the functions of technical services and enhancement of
collection access.
. Writes and maintains documentation of policies and procedures.
. Guides planning, development, and evaluation of departmental services.
. Generates timely, responsive, and accurate reports as required by
Technical Services, Collection Development, and Library Administration.
. Responsible for supervision of departmental staff and student employees
including recruitment, orientation, training, and performance evaluation.
. Contributes to overall policy, planning, problem-solving, and future
directions for Technical Services.
. Represents the Acquisitions Department on the Library Advisory Council and
in local, regional, and national forums relating to acquisitions functions
as appropriate.
. Works collaboratively with UC colleagues systemwide in consortial
resource-sharing initiatives.
Required Qualifications: ALA accredited MLS with at least 5 years
professional experience managing an Acquisitions Department or major
components of acquisitions
functions preferably in an academic research library; extensive acquisitions
experience with an integrated library system (Innovative Interfaces or
equivalent);
significant personnel management experience; experience with acquisition of
electronic resources; knowledge of latest trends in acquisitions among
research libraries; knowledge of publishing industry trends; significant
knowledge and experience with initiating and maintaining approval plans for
both domestic and foreign imprints; excellent oral and written communication
skills, with ability to communicate clearly and in a timely and effective
manner; demonstrated commitment to fostering and building a diverse
workforce and to supporting staff development in support of the University's
and the Libraries' goals of excellence and diversity.
Preferred Qualifications: Experience with implementation of electronic
resources and working in a consortial environment.
Salary and Benefits: Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience
within a range of $47,868-$94,500. Appointment at rank of Associate
Librarian II-Librarian V depending upon qualifications and experience or
appointment to the Management/Senior Professional Series (MSP). Excellent
