Salary:			$42,000.00 minimum

Join the Reference and Instructional Services (RIS) team at The University
of Tennessee Libraries during an exciting period of change and
opportunity.  We are seeking a creative, user-oriented professional to
serve as Map Librarian and subject liaison for Geography.  Play a key role
in shaping the future of Map services at the UT Libraries as we enhance
virtual access to collections and transform our environment to improve
both collaborative learning spaces and research-intensive spaces. Outreach
and user education for faculty and students who need map, geospatial, and
geographical resources is an important emphasis of this position.

The Map Librarian reports to the Social Sciences Coordinator and
participates in the work of the RIS team and the Social Sciences subject
group to plan user-centered services and implement new initiatives.  The
map collection is currently housed in the James D. Hoskins Library
building with planning underway for relocation to the John C. Hodges
(Main) Library. The UT Libraries is a selective U.S. Federal Depository
site and the Map unit serves as an Earth Science Information Center (ESIC)
for the state of Tennessee.  The collection includes over 300,000 sheet
maps and other cartographic resources. The UT Libraries is engaged in
regional map digitization efforts through its Digital Library Center. 
Located in the Hodges Library, the Reference and Instructional Services
team is responsible for reference, instruction, government documents,
distance education services and data and map services.  The team has 22
librarians organized into subject groups for Humanities, Social Sciences,
and Science and Technology.

Primary responsibilities of the Map Librarian include:

•	providing subject specific reference, consultation, and instruction for
users needing assistance with digital and print cartographic and
geospatial resources and geography collections,
•	sharing team-wide responsibility for general reference services in the
Reference room and the Commons, and through virtual technologies,
including night and weekend rotation,
•	participating in collection development and management activities for
geography and maps, including selecting, organizing, and evaluating
materials in all formats,
•	planning library services and user education programs related to GIS
applications, and coordinating the Libraries’ collaboration with other
campus GIS service providers,
•	managing the map unit of RIS, including supervision of staff.
•	working in partnership with the UT Digital Library Center to digitize
map collections.

Required Qualifications:
MLS from ALA-accredited program.  Knowledge of map librarianship and the
application of GIS services in libraries.  Experience or coursework in
reference services.  Excellent interpersonal skills and a commitment to
high quality user services.  Demonstrated ability to work both
independently and in a collaborative work environment.  Evidence of strong
oral and written communication skills with the potential to excel as an
instructor.  Knowledge of emerging library technologies and the ability to
work in a highly networked environment.  Commitment to scholarship and
professional growth.

Preferred Qualifications:
Degree in geography or related field and experience using GIS software
(ArcGIS).  Familiarity with government documents, map cataloging
practices, and FGDC metadata. Knowledge of collection development
practices for maps and scholarly communication in geography or related
fields. Public service experience in an academic library. Supervisory
experience.

Located along the Tennessee River and near the Great Smoky Mountains
National Park, the metropolitan area offers a beautiful natural

is among the nation’s most affordable.  Knoxville, and nearby Oak Ridge,
support an opera company, symphony, jazz, and an art museum, and serve as
the medical center for east Tennessee.

The University of Tennessee Libraries, with an annual budget of more than
$13 million, includes the John C. Hodges Main Library; the James D.
Hoskins Library, which includes the Map and Special Collection Libraries;
the Webster Pendergrass Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine Library; and
the George F. DeVine Music Library.  The Social Work Library is located in
Nashville.  Over three hundred persons are employed, including 58
librarians, 10 exempt, 123 non-exempt, and 150 students.  UT Libraries is
a member of the Association of Research Libraries, SOLINET, and the Center
for Research Libraries.  The UT Libraries offers a Web-based information
system and access to a variety of electronic information sources.

Salary and Benefits:
Appointment at rank of Assistant or Associate Professor, dependent upon
qualifications.  Minimum salary is $42,000.  Faculty rank and status;
twelve-month, tenure-track appointment. Library faculty must meet
University requirements for promotion and tenure, which includes research
and service components. Excellent benefits include 24 annual leave days;
choice of state retirement plan or TIAA/CREF with nonrefundable
contributions paid for the employee by the University; optional group
health and life insurance plans. Tuition remission is available for all
university employees; partial undergraduate tuition remission is available
to dependent children and spouses of UT employees.
