New Position
Between the mountains of the Blue Ridge and the shores of the Outer
Banks lies North Carolina's Research Triangle of Raleigh, Durham, and
Chapel Hill. One of the nation's premier concentrations of academic,
corporate, and public research, the area combines moderate year-round
temperatures, rolling hills, championship college athletics, and a rich
diversity of cultural events. The Triangle consistently ranks high on
lists of desirable American communities, including a recent rating as
the number-one place to be as far as education and standard of living.
The North Carolina State University Libraries has been recognized as the
first recipient of the Association of College and Research Libraries’
Excellence in Academic Libraries Award for its teamwork, innovation, and
continuous interaction with students and faculty to further the
educational mission of NC State University. The NCSU Libraries is ranked
32nd by the Association of Research Libraries among North America’s top
113 academic research libraries and 20th among public university libraries.
The NCSU Libraries invites applications and nominations for the new
position of Exhibits and Outreach Librarian for Special Collections to
join an innovative program of special collections and archives in
support of teaching and research at the university. The Special
Collections Research Center is an expanding program, with four new
positions bringing the staff to 14 FTE. A major renovation is in
progress to add a well-appointed reading room and a spacious,
state-of-the-art gallery for exhibitions.
Responsibilities
Coordinates, organizes, and implements the NCSU Libraries’ exhibits
program and manages outreach efforts of the Special Collections Research
Center. Works closely with curators to plan exhibits from the Libraries’
collections, with primary responsibility for effective design and
presentation. Reviews and edits descriptive material. Mounts traveling
exhibits borrowed from other institutions. Fabricates archival-quality
supports to display materials. Supervises the work of a half-time
Library Associate (graduate student). Coordinates with Preservation
Department to ensure the well-being of exhibited materials; monitors
environmental conditions in the gallery. Participates in the creation of
online exhibits. Projects exhibit expenses, develops budget proposals,
and manages allocated resources.
Plans and delivers public outreach, including tours, lectures, symposia,
class visits, and other educational programs to the NC State community
to encourage use of the Research Center’s material. Supervises the
Public Service Specialist responsible for the daily operation of the
Research Center’s Reading Room. Participates in library planning, serves
on library-wide committees, task forces, and teams. NCSU Librarians are
expected to be active professionally and to contribute to developments
in the field. Reports to the Head of the Special Collections Research
Center.
Qualifications
Required: ALA-accredited MLS or equivalent advanced degree in a related
field. At least three years’ relevant professional experience in the
design and installation of exhibits. Demonstrated knowledge of standards
for handling and display of original documents, drawings, maps, books
and other historic or rare material. Demonstrated effectiveness in
preparation and editing of exhibit and catalog text. Public service or
outreach experience. Excellent interpersonal and presentation skills;
demonstrated excellence in oral and written communications. Experience
creating web-based exhibits or other relevant web sites. Ability to
coordinate and supervise the work of others. Demonstrated record of
ongoing professional development and contribution. Preferred: Five or
more years’ relevant professional experience highly desirable.
Experience in special collections or archives in a research library
setting. Educational background in Fine Arts or Museum Studies.

and electronic serials, and has a total annual budget of close to $25
million, with nearly $9.25 million allocated to collections. The NCSU
Libraries is the lead server site for NC LIVE (North Carolina Libraries
for Virtual Education), a multi-type library initiative, making digital
resources accessible to the citizens of North Carolina.
The NCSU Libraries is a founding member of SOLINET and a member of the
Association of Research Libraries, the Digital Library Federation, the
Coalition for Networked Information, the Scholarly Publishing and
Academic Resources Coalition, the Council for Library and Information
Resources, and the Center for Research Libraries. Duke University, the
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, North Carolina Central
University and North Carolina State University form the Triangle
Research Libraries Network (TRLN), with combined resources of more than
13 million volumes, and collections budgets totaling more than $29 million.
Salary and Benefits
The Libraries offers highly competitive salaries in recognition of
applicable education and experience, not less than 50,000 for this
position. Relocation allowance provided. Librarians have non-tenure
track faculty status (without levels of rank). Benefits include: 24 days
vacation, 12 days sick leave; State of NC comprehensive major medical
insurance, and state, TIAA/CREF, or other retirement options. Additional
