				Reference and Instructional Services (RIS)

Appointment Rank:	Assistant or Associate Professor

Salary:			$48,000.00 minimum

The University of Tennessee Libraries invites applications for the
position of Instructional Services Coordinator.  The successful candidate
should demonstrate a strong commitment to information literacy; have
evidence of leadership in the field of bibliographic instruction and an
established record of success communicating instructional objectives to
teaching faculty and other academic personnel.  The individual should
possess a keen interest in the application of technology to instruction. 
Under the direction of the Head, Reference and Instructional Services, the
Instructional Services Coordinator will work closely with librarians,
teaching faculty, graduate teaching assistants, and technology support
staff to plan, implement, and evaluate a system-wide program of
instruction that fulfills the Libraries¡¦ mission and contributes to the
accomplishment of the Libraries¡¦ strategic priorities for the teaching
and learning library.

The Instructional Services Coordinator has primary responsibility for
coordinating instructional services within the Hodges Main Library
Reference and Instructional Services (RIS) team, while additionally
developing a strong collaborative relationship with librarians throughout
the library system.  The individual in this position will have supervisory
responsibility for RIS personnel who have assignments that support
instructional services. Within the Reference and Instructional Services
team twenty-four librarians and nine staff members work together to offer
a variety of reference services including traditional reference desk
service, email and chat reference, government documents, data, GIS and map
services, appointment-based consultation, distance education services, and
an active program of campus outreach.   The Instructional Services
Coordinator shares in all facets of the team¡¦s work.  The Instructional
Services Coordinator will serve as liaison to the School of Communication
Studies where there is currently a well-established, integrated program of
library instruction.  All library faculty, engage in research and service
activities that meet promotion and tenure criteria.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
„X	Provide vision and leadership in the Libraries and on campus for
planning and support of library instruction programs.
„X	Advise the Head, Reference and Instructional Services on team and
library-wide planning, budgeting, and support needs related to
instructional services.
„X	Organize and lead a library-wide instructional services advisory group.
„X	Promote information literacy on campus and serve on relevant university
committees.
„X	Coordinate established undergraduate information literacy programs for
Freshman Composition and Communication Studies.
„X	Serve as liaison to Communication Studies program, which includes
collection development responsibilities.
„X	Oversee assessment activities related to undergraduate library
instruction.
„X	Develop workshops, symposia, and a consultation program for faculty on
creating and integrating effective library assignments.
„X	Function in a consultative role with subject librarians in support of
instructional services.
„X	Organize continuing education and professional development
opportunities for colleagues who provide general and subject related
instruction.
„X	Serve approximately 4 hours per week at the reference desk including
occasional night and weekend assignments.
„X	Supervise RIS personnel with primary job assignments that support
instructional services.
„X	Foster relationships with other academic and K-12 librarians working
with information literacy, regionally.
„X	Participate nationally in instruction-related professional associations.
„X	Engage in research and scholarly activities.

Required Qualifications:
MLS from an ALA accredited program. Several years post-MLS reference and
instruction experience in an academic library. Recent library-related
teaching experience and a demonstrable understanding of the role of
library instruction in higher education. Knowledge of pedagogy, an
understanding of learning styles, and a commitment to information
literacy.  Successful recent experience leading innovative projects in a
collaborative environment and experience in the use of technology and
multi-media design techniques to meet instructional objectives.  Excellent
oral and written communication skills and evidence of successful outreach
to faculty and other academic programs.

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with assessment and evaluation of instruction programs. 
Supervisory experience.

the George F. DeVine Music Library.  The Social Work Library is located in
Nashville.  Over three hundred persons are employed, including 58
librarians, 10 exempt, 123 non-exempt, and 150 students.  UT Libraries is
a member of the Association of Research Libraries, SOLINET, and the Center
for Research Libraries.  The UT Libraries offers a Web-based information
system and access to a variety of electronic information sources.

Salary and Benefits:  Appointment at rank of Assistant or Associate
Professor with minimum salary of $48,000.  Faculty rank and status;
twelve-month, tenure-track appointment. Library faculty must meet
University requirements for promotion and tenure. Excellent benefits
include 24 annual leave days; choice of state retirement plan or TIAA/CREF
with nonrefundable contributions paid for the employee by the University;
optional group health and life insurance plans. Tuition remission is
available for all university employees; partial undergraduate tuition
remission is available to dependent children and spouses of UT employees.
