THE UNIVERSITY AT ALBANY AND THE UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES

The University at Albany is one of four University Centers within the
state-wide SUNY system. Established in 1844 and designated a University
Center of the State University of New York in 1962, the University at
Albany's broad mission of excellence in undergraduate and graduate
education, research and public service engages 17,000 diverse students in
nine schools and colleges across 3 campuses. Located in
<http://www.albany.org/> Albany, NY - New York State's capital - the
University is convenient to Boston, New York City and the Adirondacks.

Albany's University Libraries rank among the top 100 research libraries in
the United States. They are a highly valued partner in teaching and
research at the University, serving a campus community of 20,000 students,
faculty and staff, and a broader regional, national and international
community. The Libraries employ a dynamic and knowledgeable staff of 132
FTE and 200 part-time student assistants to provide excellent services to a
campus community that makes heavy demands on these services. Collections
total 2.1 million cataloged volumes and the Libraries offer a full spectrum
of resources, from rare books and manuscripts to an array of electronic
resources. Librarians work closely with teaching faculty to offer a varied
program of user education and information literacy instruction.

The University Library on the main campus is a large 175,000 square feet, 4
story building providing seats for 1,660. It is open 109 hours a week. It
contains several electronic library classrooms and laboratories, a 60 seat
computer user room, a large electronic reference area, and an Interactive
Media Center.

The New Library, opened in September 1999, also on the main campus adds
143,000 net square feet of space to the University Libraries and houses a
technologically advanced, 400,000 volume Science Library, the M. E.
Grenander Department of Special Collections and Archives, and the Library's
Preservation Department. It is adjacent to the Library Storage Center, a
closed library storage facility with a capacity of approximately 800,000
volumes.

The Thomas E. Dewey Graduate Library for Public Affairs and Policy on the
downtown campus contains approximately 130,000 volumes and serves the
graduate schools of Criminal Justice, Public Administration, Social Welfare
and Information Science and Policy located on that campus.

The University Libraries use the Ex Libris ALEPH system and are fully
automated. Minerva, the Libraries' online catalog contains information on
all cataloged holdings and is Internet accessible. The Libraries provide an
extensive array of electronic and networked resources and Web-accessible
services. They are members of the Association of Research Libraries, the
Center for Research Libraries, SUNYConnect and the New York State Higher
Education Initiative.
