FACULTY VACANCY

Position:	Media Services Coordinator
Appointment Rank:	Assistant or Associate Professor
Salary:	$48,000 minimum
Available:	July 1, 2006

The University of Tennessee Libraries is looking for a librarian with
experience and passion for media services and media literacy in today’s
society.  This individual will coordinate the services, facilities,
instruction, and outreach programs of The Media Center in John C. Hodges
Library, the main library on the University of Tennessee campus in
Knoxville, TN.  The Media Center team manages a media collection and
viewing services as well as a digital production laboratory called The
Studio.  Personnel include five staff, one graduate assistant, and 4.2 FTE
student library assistants.

Offering a media collection of 15,000 items (almost 10,000 in visual
formats), we reserve, prepare, and send media programming to six group
viewing rooms, an auditorium, and individual viewing carrels for
instruction and study.  The collection serves most academic subjects
including Cinema Studies.  The Studio is a service area providing a
digital laboratory of 21 computers with media input equipment and software
to capture, manipulate, and output analog or digital media.  It serves
students and faculty in the planning, creation, and evaluation of
media-enhanced instructional work.  Consultation and instruction are
important services we offer for equipment, software, and media literacy. 
The Media Center is an important component of The Commons in Hodges
Library, where library and technology services are integrated offering
extended hours, flexible study spaces, and increasing opportunities for
collaborative learning.  The Media Center sponsors, plans, and implements
public and campus programming such as Documentaries in the Libraries with
scholar discussion leaders, film series, and video production contests or
festivals.

Leadership and Supervision of the Media Center (50%)
•	Lead Media Center staff with a team approach to operational management
•	Directly supervise two unit leaders
•	Marketing, outreach, and public relations for Media Center services
•	Research and visioning for development of services and advocacy for
viable new media technologies and new media delivery methods
•	Develop a variety of reference services related to media such as
enhanced access, filmographies, support for courses
•	Lead or support public/campus programming based on media collections or
services
•	Collaborate with the Digital Media Service and other university units
involved in delivering media services to create cooperative ventures

Consultation and Instruction (15-20%)
•	One-on-one assistance to users of The Studio
•	Scheduled consultations with Studio clients
•	Develop and teach software courses offered by The Studio
•	Promote the use of new media among teaching faculty
•	Consult with librarians and staff on media solutions in their work

Subject Librarian for Cinema Studies Program & Media Collection (15-20%)
•	Serve as subject librarian for the Cinema Studies program to provide
outreach, instruction, research consultation, selection and collection
evaluation
•	Assess media collections including review of obsolete formats and
coordination of conversion planning and implementation
•	Review and select media materials for The Studio reference collection

Research and Service (15%)
•	Participate in committees of the Libraries
•	Participate in national, state, and professional organizations related
to libraries, new media, or media centers
•	Contribute research findings in publications and presentations
•	Contribute to the life and excellence of the University

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:  An ALA-accredited Master's degree.  Several
years of post-MLS experience in public services in an academic library or
in a service-based area of media technology. Excellent oral and written
communication skills.  Experience working with a range of visual and audio
formats.  Experience with both Mac and PC platforms using a variety of
media software such as Adobe, Apple, Macromedia, and MIDI.  Knowledge of
emerging trends in creation and delivery of media in libraries and
instructional settings.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's degree or significant coursework in
cinema studies, media arts, instructional technology, or an allied field.
Supervisory experience. Experience with public programming or project
management.  Understanding of copyright law and fair use.

ENVIRONMENT:
The University of Tennessee is the state’s flagship institution of higher

$13 million, includes the John C. Hodges Main Library; the James D.
Hoskins Library, which includes the Map and Special Collection Libraries;
the Webster Pendergrass Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine Library; and
the George F. DeVine Music Library.  The Social Work Library is located in
Nashville.  Over three hundred persons are employed, including 58
librarians, 10 exempt, 123 non-exempt, and 150 students.  UT Libraries is
a member of the Association of Research Libraries, SOLINET, and the Center
for Research Libraries.  The UT Libraries offers a Web-based information
system and access to a variety of electronic information sources.

SALARY AND BENEFITS:
Appointment at rank of Assistant or Associate Professor.  Minimum salary
is $48,000.  Faculty rank and status; twelve-month, tenure-track
appointment. Library faculty must meet University requirements for
promotion and tenure, which includes research and service components.
Excellent benefits include 24 annual leave days; choice of state
retirement plan or TIAA/CREF with nonrefundable contributions paid for the
employee by the University; optional group health and life insurance
plans. Tuition remission is available for all university employees;
partial undergraduate tuition remission is available to dependent children
and spouses of UT employees.
