Don't miss this fantastic opportunity to learn about an incredible topic
at a historic and extraordinary venue!

Please join PVC ASIS&T and DC/SLA for a wonderful lunch at the Supreme
Court Building as ALLISON DRUIN and ANN WEEKS of the Human-Computer
Interaction Lab (HCIL) at the University of Maryland present the
technical challenges of an informative and educational digital
library--specifically the technical evolution, difficulties, and
successes of the International Children's Digital Library (ICDL) project.

You'll also have the opportunity to meet the newest Head Librarian,
JUDITH GASKELL, recently appointed as the 10th librarian to the country's
highest court, who has graciously offered to sponsor this fantastic event.
Prior to being named for a position with the Court, she served 20 years
as director of DePaul's Rinn Law Library in Chicago, worked at the
University Of Chicago Law Library, and has library and law degrees.

ABOUT THE TOPIC:  When creating a digitial library for the world's
children, there are technical chllanges in supporting international
fonts, books, and meta data sent to us from around the world.  There
are also design opportunities and challenges in creating tools for
children.  Their research in developing and evaluating the International
Children's Digital Library (ICDL) has led them to partner with national
libraries, schools, authors, and publishers from around the world, as well
as elementary-aged children in our lab at the University of Maryland.  As
their research enters the start of its third year, they have begun to focus
on library personalization and multiple search interfaces for children
and adults.  In their talk, they will demonstrate the newest interfaces
of the ICDL, and discuss the opportunies and challenges we have faced
in our research.

The International Children's Digital Library is supported by the National
Science Foundation and the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

ABOUT THE ICDL:  Imagine a world where a comprehensive library of
international children's literature is available to all children across
the globe. Imagine a technology that can cost effectively digitize massive
amounts of information dedicated to the needs of children. These visions
capture the mission of The International Children's Digital Library (ICDL);

by providing a large-scale digital archive of literature for children ages
