----------
The School of Library, Archival and Information Studies (SLAIS) at The University of British Columbia is pleased to announce the appointment of its newest faculty member, Joseph T. Tennis, effective January 2005.
Tennis will join the SLAIS faculty as Assistant Professor on completion of his doctorate, an ontological investigation into the nature of subject analysis. He defends his dissertation this fall, and is expected to receive the first PhD granted through the recently established doctoral program at the University of Washington???s Information School. He also holds a BA from Lawrence University and an MLS and SLIS from Indiana University.
Tennis's research focuses on the theory and practice of knowledge organization, with particular attention on theories of document interpretation.
Tennis continues to be active in the Dublin Core Metadata Initiative (DCMI) , moving from his previous role as researcher for the Education Working Group, to project manager in collaboration with Siderean Software on digital library solutions for growing body of DCMI metadata publications.
Tennis's dissertation work delves into the nature of subject analysis theory, as seen from a metatheoretical perspective. He plans on turning his theoretical work into a lens for fieldwork on knowledge organization practices, comparing work practices among a variety of metadata professionals.
While at the University of Washington, he taught courses in indexing languages, metadata, interoperability, and subject access.
