Dr Norman Horrocks, Professor Emeritus, School of Library and Information
Studies, Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Editorial Consultant,
Scarecrow Press, Lanham,Maryland, and Contributing Editor, "Library
Journal", New York has been selected by the International Awards Committee
of the Professor Kaula Endowment for Library and Information Science to be
the 22nd recipient of the International Kaula Gold Medal and Citation.
This Award established in India in 1975 honors a person who has
distinguished himself or herself as a Librarian, Documentalist, or Teacher
of Library and Information Science.

Previous recipients have come from 13 different countries with five being
from North America - Dr Jesse Shera (Case Western Reserve),Dr Nasser
Sharify (Pratt Institute), Harry Campbell (UNESCO, Paris and Toronto
Public Library), Dr Mohammed Aman (University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee) and
Dr Eugene Garfield (Institute for Scientific Information,Philadelphia).

Professor Kaula has been described as the "apostle" of famed Indian
librarian Dr S.R.Ranganathan(1892-1972). He edits three LIS journals and
is a past President of the Indian Library Association and of the Indian
Association of Teachers of Library and Information Science.  Widely
travelled, Professor Kaula served as UNESCO expert for Latin America based
in Havana in the 1970s. He retired in 1984 as Professor and Head of the
Library School at Banaras Hindu University at Varanasi.  Professor Kaula
has
received many national and International awards, most recently the Padma
Shri
(2004) a top civilian honor from the Government of India which Dr
Ranganathan
himself received in 1955.
