Since June 2002 ERPANET (the European Commission funded Electronic Resource
Preservation and Access Network http://www.erpanet.org) has run a series of
seminars and workshops across Europe, bringing together international
experts to explore topics related to digital preservation. This one-day
workshop aims to make accessible the results of several of these events to
UK archivists and records managers. The day begins with a brief
introduction and is followed by an explanation of how policies and
procedures can be used to improve the preservation of digital materials and
then by an examination of the current models for creating and populating
digital repositories. The afternoon session begins with a review of current
approaches to metadata and then examines how audit and certification
procedures can contribute to ensure that effective preservation methods are
adopted and maintained. The penultimate session of the day makes accessible
recent thinking on the deployment of ISO15489 to provide a unified model of
records management. There will be opportunities for discussion in each
session as well as at the close of the day.
