ASSISTANT PROFESSORS IN ARCHIVAL STUDIES AND LIBRARY AND INFORMATION STUDIES
  
The School of Library, Archival and Information Studies at the University of British Columbia invites applications for two full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor positions in its Master of Archival Studies and Master of Library and Information Studies programs, to begin July 1, 2004, subject to final budgetary approval. Candidates should demonstrate achievement of, or potential for, excellence in teaching, research, and service in an interdisciplinary environment.
  
Position 1:  Archival Studies
  
The successful candidate will be expected to teach and conduct research on the design and application of digital technology in such areas as the intellectual control, retrieval, and access of archival material; management of current records in electronic systems; business process re-engineering; and archival work processes such as appraisal, preservation, and reference service. In addition, the successful candidate will teach an introductory course on archives and information technology.
  
Position 2:  Library and Information Studies
  
The successful candidate will be expected to teach and conduct research on one of: theory and application of the organization of information (e.g., organization of information and knowledge; classification theory; subject analysis; knowledge representation; application of principles of organization to emerging technologies) or reference and information services (e.g., information resources in all formats; digital/virtual reference services, information-seeking behaviours; information literacy; services for a variety of user groups).
  
Applicants must hold a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in a field related to the teaching and research areas of the position, or anticipate early completion, with continuation of appointment conditional on completion of the doctorate within six months. Applicants must provide strong evidence of their teaching ability or potential for excellence in teaching and continued professional growth; of their ability to conduct research and engage in scholarly activity; and of a publication record commensurate with their experience.
  
The School offers a Master of Archival Studies (MAS), a Master of Library and Information Studies (MLIS), a joint MAS/MLIS, a multidisciplinary Master of Arts in Children's Literature, a joint Master of Education in teacher-librarianship and doctorate in library, archival and information studies leading to the awarding of a Ph.D. Further information about the School can be found on its Web site at www.slais.ubc.ca.
 
The deadline date for receipt of applications is January 30, 2004. Preliminary interviews with interested candidates will be held at the ALISE conference in San Diego in January 2004. Application materials should include a cover letter stating the candidate???s qualifications for the position, projected research agenda, and teaching philosophy; a complete curriculum vitae; and the names and contact information of a minimum of three referees.
