Position Announcement: Assistant Dean 

The Assistant Dean is responsible for maintaining the major technical and 
administrative functions of the School of Information Studies (SOIS). 
Reporting to the SOIS dean, this individual supervises the technical staff and 
the administrative staff and assists the Dean and Associate Dean with internal 
and external operations and relationships. The position of the Assistant Dean 
is a 12-month limited appointment and is backed by an academic staff 
appointment.

The position requires a high energy level, integrity, the ability to function 
as a team worker, a demonstrated aptitude for innovation and other methods of 
creative problem solving, and a professional record appropriate for 
appointment as an academic professional within the School. 

Required qualifications include a Master’s Degree and six years managerial 
experience; strong interpersonal skills; fluency with spreadsheet and database 
programs such as Access, FoxPro, and Excel; the ability to work collegially 
and effectively with individuals at all levels within or related to a complex 
organization (in this case students, staff, faculty, administrators, and 
external constituents); strong verbal and written communication skills; and 
administrative/managerial experience. 

Preferred qualifications include a master’s degree in Library and Information 
Studies or in a related field; experience with comprehensive administrative 
software systems, such as PeopleSoft; experience generating statistical 
reports; a working knowledge of distance education systems; knowledge of the 
information industry; and experience as a network administrator. Experience 
working with diverse groups is an asset.

Specific responsibilities of the Assistant Dean:

Administration (70%)
1. Coordinates administrative databases and records; serves as the liaison 
with the campus Data Warehouse Reporting Team;
2. Manages the SOIS student/alumni database and coordinates its development 
and maintenance.
3. Develops statistical reports for planning, budget, administration, 
students, and accrediting agencies.
4. Coordinates public relations, in consultation with the dean and associate 
dean;
5. Manages class/faculty scheduling and classroom assignments in consultation 
with the associate dean, executive committee and the director of the 
undergraduate program;
6. Oversees and assigns physical resources and facilities, in consultation 
with the dean and associate dean;
7. Evaluates computer classroom needs and submit recommendations for 
improvement and upgrading to the Computer Policy Committee;
8. Assists the dean and associate dean in obtaining extramural funding;
9. Assists the dean and associate dean in academic, programmatic, internal and 
external reviews (institutional, ALA accreditation, program array reviews, 
etc.);
10. Develops SOIS non-credit, continuing education program offerings, 
including off-campus programs and web-based courses;
11. Manages continuing education workshops, conferences, and related 
activities;

Supervision (15%)
12. Oversees and supervises the general operations of the SOIS administrative 
office;
13. Supervises a staff consisting of information technology specialists, a 
grant writer, a graphics designer, administrative assistants, and student 
employees, among others as needed;

Liaison activities (15%)
14. Serves as liaison to the UWM Alumni College, Homecoming, and other events
15. Serves as the SOIS Unit Technology Representative
16. Represents SOIS in a variety of campus-wide committees as needed
