Subject: Our loss: Tom Galvin
When the holiday came and we didn't have our annual card from Tom, we knew
something was wrong.
At Midwinter we learned he had been hospitalized, gone home, and was back
in the hosptial. He lost his battle yesterday.
Tom became Dean at the University of Pittsburgh in 1974. While he was
there, he saw three students through their doctoral program and into deans
and director positions: Jim Matarazzo, Joe Mika, and Brooke Sheldon. These
are only three among many other students from the Pitt and the Albany
doctoral programs that Tom sent out to fill library educator positions.
We were delighted to be his sideline support when he was President of ALA
back before presidents had as much support as they now have. For his
Presidential events in New York, Chancellor Wes Posvar attended the
inaugural banquet, indicative of the high respect Tom commanded from the
administration at Pitt.
He orchestrated the collaborative Telecommunications program that joined
five units from acrosss the University, but housing the program in the
then School of Library and Information Science.
With the support of NCLIS, institutes were held at Pitt for state
librarians. These were followed by very successful information science
programs organized by Tom and Allen Kent.
When Provost Don Henderson challenged the Deans at Pitt to find the best
of the best in their disciplines, Tom was able to attract Dr. E.J. Josey
to Pitt.
We who taught for him, took classes from him, and remained friends with
him will miss him.
