Description:  The University of Tennessee Libraries is seeking a dynamic,
experienced, and visionary leader with broad-based skills for the position
of Head, Special Collections Library, The University of Tennessee.  The
Special Collections Library is a national resource specializing in the
history, literature, and culture of Tennessee and the Southeast
(http://www.lib.utk.edu/spcoll). The collection consists of over 50,000
volumes of rare books and 10,000 linear feet of manuscripts and includes
the Archives of The University of Tennessee.  The position oversees and
coordinates the work of  one librarian and three support staff.  A major
task of the position is involvement with the Digital Library Center to
improve access to primary materials. The head works closely with the
Executive Director of the Howard H. Baker, Jr., Center for Public Policy
to enhance and make accessible the collections of modern political papers.
Serves as a member of the Humanities Group. The position reports to the
Associate Dean of Libraries and is a member of the Libraries Management
Group.

Responsibilities:  Provide clear vision and strong leadership for the
Special Collections Library, emphasizing personalized user services,
dynamic outreach, faithful stewardship, and a cooperative collegial
environment.  Effectively manage, administer, and supervise daily
operations of the Special Collections Library.  Ensure the enhancement and
long-term preservation of the collections.  Apply current and emerging
technologies to enable and improve intellectual access to collections for
on-campus and off-campus patrons.  Work with past and potential donors to
the Special Collections Library.  Share responsibility for the stewardship
of gifts to the Library.  Facilitate effective working relationships and
work collaboratively within the University Libraries, across campus, and
with outside agencies and organizations.  Actively participate in the
overall management of the Libraries and in statewide, regional and
national professional organizations.

Required Qualifications:  MLS from an ALA-accredited program.  Minimum of
five years progressively responsible experience in archives and/or special
collections in a research institution.  Successful supervisory experience
with commitment to mentoring, training, diversity, and staff development. 
Demonstrated service orientation and instructional skills. Strong
interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.  Ability to work
collaboratively with diverse populations.  Well-developed management,
team-building, and decision-making skills along with initiative,
flexibility, and the ability to facilitate change.  Knowledge of current
trends and technological developments in the field.  Strong record of
performance (experience), scholarly or creative achievement, and
professional accomplishments appropriate for rank of associate or full
professor.

Preferred Qualifications:  Knowledge of United States history and culture
with particular emphasis on the Southeast, 19th and 20th century politics,
Native Americans.   Substantial academic library experience. Graduate
degree in a discipline related to collection strengths.  Fund-raising
experience. Grant writing and grant management experience. Training in
archival and rare book librarianship.

Salary and Benefits: Appointment at rank of Associate Professor or
Professor with minimum salary of $65,000.  Librarians at the University of
Tennessee, Knoxville have faculty rank and status and are appointed for
twelve months. This is a tenure track appointment. Library faculty must
meet University requirements for promotion and tenure. Annual leave is
accrued at the rate of two days per month and sick leave at the rate of
one day per month. Faculty have their choice of a state retirement plan or
ORP. Non-refundable contributions to either retirement plan are paid for
the employee by the University. Group health and life insurance plans are
available. Tuition remission is available for all university employees;
partial undergraduate tuition remission is available to dependent children
and spouses of UT employees.

ENVIRONMENT:  The University of Tennessee is the state’s flagship
institution of higher education, offering comprehensive programs of
undergraduate, graduate, and professional education; research; and public
service throughout the state.  Enrollment in the statewide system is
approximately 42,000.  Our students come from every county in Tennessee,
every state in the nation, and many foreign countries.  The university
holds the Carnegie Doctoral/Research-Extensive classification.  It is the
oldest and largest public institution of higher education in Tennessee,
founded in Knoxville in 1794, two years before Tennessee became a state.

The University of Tenneseee Libraries, with an annual budget of more than
$13 million, includes the John C. Hodges Main Library; the James D.
Hoskins Library, which includes the Map and Special Collection Libraries;
the Webster Pendergrass Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine Library; and
the George F. DeVine Music Library.  The Social Work Library is located in
Nashville.  Over three hundred persons are employed, including 58
librarians, 10 exempt, 123 non-exempt, and 150 students.  UT Libraries is
a member of the Association of Research Libraries, SOLINET, and the Center
for Research Libraries.  The UT Libraries offers a Web-based information
system and access to a variety of electronic information sources.
