INFORMATION INSTITUTE CELEBRATES FIVE YEAR ANNIVERSARY AND NEW FACILITIES
The Information Use Management and Policy Institute of the School of Information Studies at Florida State University is pleased to announce an open house reception on August 23, 2004 from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. This reception celebrates the fifth anniversary of the Institute and introduces its new office facilities in suite 010 of the Louis B. Shores Building. Alight lunch will be available.
Charles R. McClure, Institute Director and Frances Eppes Professor said, “during its five-year existence, the Institute has been very successful in conducting research related to a wide range of topics within the field of library and information science, such as information policy, management, user needs, evaluation, usability, and access.” The Institute has been awarded numerous grants from federal, state, and private funding sources, including the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the American Library Association, the U.S. Institute for Museum and Library Services, the Association of Research Libraries, the Florida Division of Library Services, and the U.S. General Accounting Office.
These grant projects, totaling approximately $2 million, have resulted in high quality research studies, findings, and results. John Bertot, Professor and Associate Director of the Institute stated “researchers have also been prolific publishers of research articles, book chapters, online tutorials, and books on topics related to Institute research.” In 2004, articles by Institute staff members have appeared in or will appear in journals such as Library Quarterly, Journal of the American Society for Information Science and Technology, Library & Information Science Research, Library Journal, Journal of Disability Policy Studies, First Monday, Library Journal, and Journal of Government Information.
In the past five years, the Institute has brought new opportunities to Florida State University faculty and students. Jane Robbins, Dean and Assistant Director of the Information Institute noted that “numerous faculty members of the University have worked in collaboration with the Institute on research projects, and the Institute has provided funding for a number of faculty members and graduate students to develop their own research proposals.”
The new facilities for the Information Institute include a suite of offices, a central area of new workstations and computing equipment, and working areas for graduate students, and a conference room. Susan Thomas, Coordinator of Research Programs/Services, coordinated the planning and development of the new facilities that was funded jointly by the Information Institute, the School of Information Studies, and the Office of the Vice President for Research.
