The Department of Library and Information Science in the School of
Information Sciences (http://www.sis.pitt.edu) at the University of
Pittsburgh is seeking candidates for two tenure-stream faculty positions
to start no later than Fall Term 2004.

The School emphasizes the synthesis of people, information and technology,
and offers opportunities for research, instruction, and service spanning
the needs of an information-intensive and increasingly-digital society.
The School is seeking candidates with a strong commitment to research as
well as graduate and undergraduate education.

. The Department seeks a faculty member with theoretical and
practical expertise in the Organization of Information (both traditional
and digital) and an interest or specific focus in:
 * Knowledge management
 * Knowledge Representation
 * Ontologies/taxonomies
 * Metadata generation and control
 * Semantic web
 * Indexing and abstracting
 * Cataloging/classification/subject analysis

. The Department seeks a faculty member with theoretical and
practical expertise in Information Systems and an interest or specific
focus in:
 * Retrieval of digital information - images, sound, text
 * Digital libraries
 * Electronic publishing
 * Electronic reference
 * User-centered systems (analysis and design)

Candidates who offer complementary expertise in the areas of the
bio/medical informatics, special and corporate information services, or
social informatics are particularly encouraged to apply.  Experience with
distance education is an asset.

Candidates who bridge areas of interest are encouraged to apply.
Successful candidates will demonstrate a strong interest and current
awareness of the technological and cultural context in which their
knowledge contributes to issues of contemporary society.  A record of
collaboration with other scholars is highly desirable.

Both positions require an earned doctorate and are tenure-stream
appointments at the assistant professor level or at a rank commensurate
with qualifications.  Applicants should present a record of effective
teaching, research, and related scholarly activities.
