POSITION ANNOUNCMENT: PLEASE POST

Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor. The School of
Library and Information Science of the University of South Carolina is
accepting applications for two (2) tenure track faculty positions at any
of these appointment levels, depending on qualifications.

The School seeks one individual with teaching and research interests
focused on one or more of the following areas: information retrieval,
digital libraries/archives, knowledge management, information
architecture, or human-computer interaction (HCI).

A second individual is being sought with teaching and research
interests focused on one or more of the following areas: school library
media programs (with emphasis on instructional technology), academic
libraries, and information sources and services in the humanities,
business, and government.

Candidates will be expected to demonstrate enthusiasm for and
excellence in teaching, strength in publication showing potential for
scholarly productivity, a strong commitment to distance learning, a
student-centered focus, and the ability to assume a leadership role in
state and national professional communities and the University. We are
particularly interested in receiving applications from minorities.

The School serves state, regional, and national audiences through
campus-based and distance learning programs. The School is strongly
committed both to traditional library services as well as information
services and technologies in rapidly changing organizational and
technological environments. The School is fully accredited by the
American Library Association (ALA), and approved by the National Council
for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). It offers the
Master of Library and Information Science degree and two programs of
advanced study beyond the Master's degree: the Certificate of Advanced
Graduate Study in Library and Information Science and the Specialist in
Library and Information Science.

In the past year the School has merged with the School of Journalism
and Mass Communications to form the College of Mass Communications and
Information Studies. This has opened up new and exciting cooperative
teaching and research possibilities for the faculties of both schools.

Minimum qualifications include an earned doctorate by the appointment
date, a clearly articulated research agenda, and evidence of teaching
excellence. Full-time work experience in one or more of the relevant
areas of specialization is also desirable.

Appointment is expected for August, 2004 but may occur at an earlier
date. The appointment is on a nine-month salary basis, commensurate
with rank and qualifications. Graduate research assistance is provided.
Separately compensated summer teaching opportunities are available.
