Full-time Faculty Position
Drexel University's College of Information Science & Technology (IST)
invites applications for one or more tenure-track positions in Library and
Information Science at the assistant, associate, or full professor
level. We are particularly interested in applicants with teaching and
research competencies in one or more of the following areas:
· Cataloging and classification/organization of knowledge
· Academic libraries and librarianship
· Scholarly & professional communication
· Information retrieval/digital libraries, with a particular
interest in TREC-related studies and visual information retrieval
· Management of information organizations
Secondary interests in areas such as healthcare informatics and user
studies & information behavior are welcome.
ISTâs nationally ranked ALA-accredited MS in library and information
science program is the second oldest library science program in the nation
(founded in 1892) and has maintained ALA accreditation since 1924
(reaccredited in 2003). Ranked 9th overall and 1st for our information
systems specialization within the MS(LIS) degree, we continue to evolve as
an innovative leader in library and information science in the twenty-first
century, combining high quality teaching and research in a broad,
multidisciplinary, and collaborative environment. In addition to the
MS(LIS), IST also offers a BS and an MS in Information Systems, a BS and an
MS in Software Engineering, and the PhD. Through Drexel e-Learning, we
offer a number of online post-baccalaureate certificate programs, including
a certificate in Competitive Intelligence.
The College is growing rapidly and has 29 full-time faculty and about 1500
students. We have been offering the MS(LIS) in a completely asynchronous
online format since 2000. The online MS(LIS) program, with specializations
in Management of Digital Information and Information/Library Services draws
students from across the US and overseas; currently about 40% of the 200+
MS(LIS) students are either in the online program or have taken one or more
online courses.
The IST view of information is broad, multidisciplinary, and practical. LIS
faculty research covers a broad spectrum of library & information science
areas, including youth information services, scholarly and professional
communication, human information behavior, bibliometrics, information
visualization, and information retrieval.
The successful candidate will have:
· A completed doctorate in library and information science or a
cognate field
· Excellent verbal and written communication skills
· Evidence of excellence in teaching and research
· Interest in a highly collaborative faculty environment
Candidates for senior positions should have an established research record
and success in obtaining external research funding.
Drexel is a privately endowed technology university founded in 1891. With
approximately 16,000 students, it has one of the largest undergraduate
cooperative education programs in the nation, with formal relationships in
place with over 1500 local, national, and multi-national companies. Drexel
is located on Philadelphiaâs Avenue of Technology in University City and
at the hub of the academic, cultural, and historical resources of the
nationâs fourth largest metropolitan region. Philadelphia is also the
midpoint of a mid-Atlantic technology corridor that stretches from New York
City (100 miles north) to Washington, DC (135 miles south).
