The School of Information and Library Science at the University of North 
Carolina-Chapel Hill invites qualified candidates to apply for the school

Dean of the School of Information and Library Science, UNC-Chapel Hill

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill 
(<http://www.unc.edu/>http://www.unc.edu/), the nation's oldest public 
university, seeks nominations and applications for the position of Dean of 
the School of Information and Library Science. The University is a 
Doctoral/Research – Extensive university and a member of the Association of 
American Universities. The Dean is the administrative officer of the School 
and reports to the University Provost. The position is a tenured academic 
appointment.

We are seeking an individual who will provide dynamic leadership for the 
work of the School: academic programs, research, funding, faculty 
development, and service to a wide array of state and national 
constituents. The successful candidate will articulate the vision of the 
School for the University and the state, and for the national and 
international communities of information professionals. The dean will 
collaborate with faculty, staff, and students to translate the School’s 
vision into achievements in research, teaching, and service.

Among the primary qualities we seek in the person to be appointed is the 
ability to balance diverse interests in a rapidly evolving field. The 
successful candidate will be decisive, fair minded, and dedicated to the 
advancement of the School. In addition to these qualities, the ideal 
candidate will be a visible presence in information and library science 
education and research, will have had successful administrative experience, 
and will be committed to a consultative, balanced, and responsive deanship.

The School of Information and Library Science

professional schools at UNC-CH. The School offers an undergraduate degree 
in information science, master’s degrees in information science and library 
science, and a Ph.D. The School currently has 23 faculty members, with 309 
graduate students and 47 undergraduate majors enrolled in its programs. The 
School benefits from strong support and collaboration across the University 
campus, and has academic, corporate, and government partners in the 
surrounding Research Triangle community. The School’s work is supported by 
an Information and Technology Resources Center that integrates 
state-of-the-art computer, networking, and multimedia capabilities with an 
extensive print library collection. The School has consistently ranked in 
national peer surveys as one of the three leading programs in information 
and library science.

The review of nominations and applications will begin immediately and will 
continue until a candidate has been selected. Candidates should submit a 
cover letter describing their interest in, and qualifications for, the
