Newspaper Cataloger - Tennessee Newspaper Project
Two-Year Temporary Appointment
General Description: The Newspaper Cataloger is responsible for the
cataloging of unique newspaper titles held in Western Tennessee.
Cataloging includes creating original records, enhancing existing
bibliographic records, modifying any local data records according to
standards. The Cataloger works in Memphis but reports to the Cataloging
Coordinator in the main project office at the University of Tennessee in
Knoxville.
Duties and Responsibilities: Under the supervision of the Cataloging
Coordinator, the librarian performs original cataloging of Tennessee
newspapers. The librarian enhances existing OCLC bibliographic records as
needed and modifies local data records in OCLC that are part of the
Tennessee Newspaper union list profile. The librarian may participate in
the assessment of the condition of newspaper or microfilm. This position
requires travel in Tennessee. The librarian will hire and supervise at
least one FTE staff member.
Required Qualifications: MLS from an ALA-accredited program. Working
knowledge of AACR2 and MARC serials format. Experience with OCLC. Valid
drivers license. New graduates having taken a course in cataloging or
information access are encouraged to apply. Beginning dates in June will
be considered.
Preferred Qualifications: Cataloging experience. Experience working with
serials, newspapers, and/or microfilm. Internet experience.
Salary and Benefits: Salary range $35,000 - $38,000. Annual leave is
accrued at the rate of two days per month and sick leave at the rate of
one day per month. Choice of a state retirement plan or TIAA/CREF.
Non-refundable contributions to either retirement plan are paid for the
employee by the university. Group health and life insurance plans are
available.
Additional Information: The Tennessee Newspaper Project is part of the
United States Newspaper Program, a national effort to locate, catalog,
preserve and make accessible to researchers American newspaper from the
earliest colonial days until the present. The project receives funding,
oversight, and technical assistance from the National Endowment for the
Humanities and the Library of Congress. Funding is guaranteed through
April 2004.
