DOCTORAL FUNDING AVAILABLE FALL 2003 AND 2004 AT
INDIANA UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF LIBRARY AND INFORMATION
SCIENCE
The School of Library and Information Science (SLIS) at Indiana
University
has been awarded a grant for five doctoral fellowships from the
Department
of Education Graduate Assistance in Areas of National Need (GAANN)
program. GAANN assists graduate students with excellent records who
demonstrate financial need and plan to pursue the highest degree
available
in a field designated as an area of national need. Fellowship recipients
will receive an annual cash stipend (up to $21,500 based on demonstrated
financial need), plus tuition and fees, for up to five years. To be
eligible, applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents.
SLIS seeks qualified applicants for a Ph.D. in such areas of information
science as human-computer interaction, digital libraries, information
retrieval, information visualization, usability studies, knowledge
organization and representation, social and organizational informatics,
and computer-mediated communication. Applicants should possess
impressive
academic credentials, a strong interest in the nature and use of
information, and a commitment to acquiring and applying the theoretical
and methodological skills necessary to perform scientific research in
information science. Disciplinary background is less important than a
demonstrable interest in understanding and contributing to the knowledge
base of the field. We strongly encourage applications from students
traditionally underrepresented in information science.
