Please note the deadline for the Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER)
Program is fast approaching:

Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Program
Publication NSF 02-111 (http://www.nsf.gov/pubsys/ods/getpub.cfm?nsf02111)

July 22, 2003: DEADLINE DATE FOR BIO, CISE*, AND EHR

* CISE Hierarchy:
CISE = Computer & Information Science and Engineering Directorate
IIS = Information & Intelligent Systems Division
IDM = Information & Data Management Program
DAS = Data & Applications Security Program

For additional information, Frequently Asked Questions, etc., check the
CAREER Web page <http://www.nsf.gov/career>.

We would like to encourage eligible junior faculty to submit proposals and
would like to ask the more experienced faculty as well as industry
researchers to mentor the junior colleagues.

Please check the information on the Information & Data Management Program
(IDM) and the Data & Applications Security Program (DAS) at
http://www.cise.nsf.gov/iis. Please note that the DAS Program does not have
an open call for proposals, so proposals within the scope of the DAS Program
should be submitted to the IDM Program. Bhavani Thuraisingham and Maria
Zemankova will work together on handling the DAS-related proposals.

We would like to receive proposals that have vision, are technically strong,
include an innovative integration/symbiosis of the research and educational
activities, and show a potential for broad impacts.

It is important that a proposal motivates the proposed research, states the
research challenges/risks and expected outcomes, includes a
validation/evaluation plan, provides an integrated research and education
plan for 5 years (with success milestones), and explicitly discusses broader
impacts (e.g., human capital, dissemination and application of results,
...).

We welcome interdisciplinary proposals and encourage the Principal
Investigators to contact the prospective NSF Program Directors, and based on
the received feedback, indicate all relevant programs on the Proposal Cover
Form under FOR CONSIDERATION BY NSF ORGANIZATION UNIT(S). Since the proposal
submission deadlines are staggered for the various NSF directorates, please
make sure to follow the deadline for the first program you mention (or
simply make sure to submit the proposal before or on July 22, 2003).

We would like to encourage you to take a look at the CAREER, regular or ITR
(Information Technology Research) awards recently awarded in the Information
and Data Management Program and in the Data and Applications Security
Program, and any other relevant programs.

Please access the NSF Web site <http://www.nsf.gov>, select "Grants and
Awards", then "Award Data", and under "Fastlane Searches" select "List of
Awards by Program" (direct URL
https://www.fastlane.nsf.gov/a6/A6QueryPgm.htm. You can then search for
programs by name (e.g., program title containing "data"), restrict the
awards to specified timeframes, etc.

You can specify more complex searches under "Fielded Search" (direct URL
https://www.fastlane.nsf.gov/a6/A6SrchAwdf.htm).

You can specify the award title should start with "CAREER", type the search
terms in the text box (all the way down), you can also restrict your search
to a time period, NSF division, etc.

So, if you specify:

Full text search: information AND security

You'd get:
Award Search Results
Found 491 awards looking for (information and security)
(NOTE: number of awards is as of today, 6/3/03)

If you specify:

Title Option: Starts with Title: CAREER
NSF Organization: IIS
Full text search: information AND security

You'd get:
Award Search Results
Found 5 awards looking for (information and security) <AND> ( awdTitle
<STARTS> 'CAREER' ) <AND> (( awdNSFOrg <CONTAINS> 'IIS' ))
(NOTE: number of awards is as of today, 6/3/03)

You can read the award abstracts, see who is working on this research, see
which programs funded the awards, contact the Program Director, etc.

If you have any logistics questions (e.g., eligibility), please contact
William Bainbridge <mailto:wbainbri at nsf.gov), 703-292-8930.

We can discuss research issues with you and try to provide guidance, but
cannot read your proposals and provide comments.

We are looking forward to receiving a good batch of strong, exciting CAREER
proposals.

Best wishes,

            Maria & Bhavani
