> SUMMARY
The cataloger performs both original and copy cataloging of Texas documents
and other monographs and serials following Anglo American Cataloging Rules
(second edition) and Library of Congress Rule Interpretations. The
resulting MARC records are contributed to OCLC's WorldCat database and
exported into the Texas State Library and Archives' online catalog.
> ESSENTIAL
Perform original cataloging of monographs and serials in print and non-print
formats, meeting measurable quantitative and qualitative production
standards, in order to provide access to these materials through the
integrated library system database, and OCLC database.
Perform name authority work in formal cooperation with the Library of
Congress (NACO project).
Perform copy cataloging.
Maintain consistency and quality in the catalog.
Maintain awareness of current developments in cataloging practice.
Submit statistical and other reports.
Attend work regularly and in accordance with agency leave and attendance
policies.
Comply with all applicable agency policies and procedures, including safety
and standards of conduct.
> NON-ESSENTIAL
Assist the Head Cataloger in planning for the section and training staff.
Consult with librarians outside the agency on state publications cataloging
matters.
May serve as Cataloging's computer desktop support liaison or web author.
May be called upon to submit articles to professional journals, or to make
formal presentations to professional groups at the local, state, or national
level.
> MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Master's degree from an ALA-accredited library school.
One year professional work experience as a cataloger, including original
cataloging of monographs and/or serials using Anglo-American Cataloging
Rules, second edition, current revision and the OCLC cataloging subsystem.
Work must have included some cataloging of other than trade books
and for-profit serials.
OR
Two years experience as a cataloging assistant, including copy cataloging of
monographs and/or serials
using Anglo-American Cataloging Rules, second edition, current
revision and the OCLC cataloging subsystem.
Work must have included some cataloging of other than trade books
and for-profit serials.
One year experience with library automation systems.
Ability to move in and around personal work space and to and from other
areas of the library to attend meetings, deliver/retrieve materials or other
activities outside of personal work space.
Ability to perform highly technical procedures.
Ability to perform visual activities requiring prolonged attention to
detail.
Ability to use computers.
Ability to record very limited information using handwritten means.
> PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Two years successful professional experience as a cataloger.
Experience with MARC-based library automation system.
Successful professional experience cataloging federal or state publications.
Experience with SIRSI's Unicorn system.
Experience as independent contributor in the NACO project.
Experience creating and/or editing OCLC Passport for Windows macros.
Experience as a computer desktop support liaison or web author.
Knowledge of pre-AACR2 cataloging rules.
Knowledge of the history and structure of Texas state government.
Some experience training staff.
> OTHER REQUIREMENTS
College transcripts (undergraduate and graduate) must be submitted.
Will be given an in basket exercise during the interview to test cataloging
knowledge
> SUPERVISION
Has no supervisory responsibility. Reports to Head of Cataloging, Archives
and Information Services Division.
