Kent State University
School of Library and Information Science

Associate or Assistant Professor

The Kent State University School of Library and Information Science is
seeking an applicant for a tenure-track position at the rank of Associate
or Assistant Professor, pending approval. Specialized teaching competencies
or research interests are sought in the following areas: Records
Management, Archives, Technical Services, Organization of Information,
Knowledge Management, and Special Libraries. Applicants will also be
expected to teach one or more of the School's core courses in the areas of
foundations of librarianship, organization of information, access to
information, and research for decision making in libraries and information
centers.

When it comes to libraries and information centers, Ohio is at the leading
edge. Ohio is a recognized leader in excellent library services as
evidenced by the HALPR and in library and information networks, including
OhioLink (the academic library network), OPLIN (the public library network)
and INFOhio (the school library network). As a place in which to live and
work, northeast Ohio offers an excellent standard of living and a wide
range of experiences from the beautiful and historic Cuyahoga River Valley
to the world renowned Cleveland Orchestra.

Kent State University has made major investments in state-of-the-art
information and networked technologies and is classified as a "Doctoral
Extensive" university by Carnegie and is a member of the Internet2
consortium. Furthermore, Kent State University has a proven track record
in diversity, research, and the creation and development of opportunities
for individual and collective growth. The School of Library and
Information Science offers applicants many advantages: a growing faculty
that values and supports a commitment to the profession, dynamic research,
team spirit, and innovative teaching and programs.

The only School of Library and Information Science in Ohio supports one of
the largest professional library and information science programs in North
America. The master's degree is offered at the School's two campuses in
Kent and Columbus. The School also is actively involved in distance
learning within Ohio through its 12-12-12 Distance Degree Program. This
program, initiated in Fall 2001, offers an on-going series of interactive
video classes over a two-year period, leading to an MLIS degree in various
regional locations in Ohio. These video courses are supplemented with
web-based courses and on-site workshops. The School has two
state-of-the-art interactive video facilities and offers courses to
similarly equipped sites in various Ohio public libraries. This program is
very successful and enrollment is expected to continue to increase as the
School expands its offering of distance learning opportunities. The
University strongly supports these efforts and has provided the School and
individual faculty with the resources necessary to expand the program.

The Kent campus is the academic home of approximately 400 of the Schools
650+ students. Approximately 150 students are enrolled through the Columbus
program and over 100 external students are currently taking courses via
interactive video. This position will be available at the Kent campus, but
applicants will be expected to teach
courses by interactive video and to develop web-based courses.

Qualifications include a masters degree in library and information science
or a related field and a completed doctorate or substantial progress toward
completion in library and information science or a related field.
Experience and/or interest in distance learning is highly desirable.
Nine-month appointment; summer teaching is generally available. Faculty are
encouraged to offer workshops, on-site, by video, or as web-based, for
additional compensation. Salary is competitive; benefits are excellent. The
position is available for Fall 2003. Applications will be accepted until
the position is filled; review of applicants will begin January 2003.

Applicants should submit a letter of application, resume, copies of
transcripts from all colleges and universities attended (official
transcripts will be required in the event of employment), and names of at
least three references to:
