This year’s Summer Reading Program theme is Ohio’s Bicentennial. Come to
this workshop and learn many different ways to approach this theme. You will
start out the day with mini-lectures on topics concerning your Summer
Reading Program and children’s programming. Next you will get candid advice
about crafts as we share what really works and what does not. Then you will
sit back and enjoy a performance by a local musician you can schedule for
your library. After a provided lunch, you will enjoy another performance by
a local performer. And last but not least, you will get the opportunity to
learn about 7 different Bicentennial sub-themes you can use for your Summer
Reading Program! Each Summer Reading committee member will be stationed at a
self-made booth ready to show and give you information about a sub-theme. At
each booth, you will receive a packet with a week’s worth of programming
ideas related to that theme—including crafts, songs and games, related book
selections, presenters and much more. Come to Summer Reading Program 2003
and leave with your library’s Summer Reading Program planned! Summer Reading
2003 is going to be a blast—there will be prizes, food, music, and great
ideas. Come share in the learning and fun with your fellow children’s

THE "MARVEL" OF IT ALL: STARTING A GRAPHIC NOVEL COLLECTION

FUNDRAISING FOR THE PUBLIC LIBRARY

The "Culture of Fundraising" (or lack thereof) is a challenge to many public
libraries. Is it appropriate to fundraise? How do you get started? Where do
you fundraise? Tax support - government sources, local levies and limited
State Library funded projects are not sufficient for library budgets and
must be supplemented with fundraising. At this workshop, we will explore the
Camp A formal written proposal process of fundraising - businesses,
corporations and government. We will also explore the Camp B informal
fundraising - individuals, endowments, library foundations, small local
businesses, service clubs and other community support. 83% of private giving
in 2001 in the U.S. came - Camp B sources. Come to this workshop and learn
how to increase your fundraising dollars! A "working" lunch will be

MANAGING DIFFICULT PATRONS: THE ANGRY, THE DISRUPTIVE, THE DANGEROUS

REPAIR DECISIONS AND METHODS FOR CIRCULATING MATERIALS

The goal of this workshop is to teach repair methods that are less damaging
to books, leading to preservation-oriented, archival-quality collection
maintenance. Participants will learn to determine the appropriate methods
for preserving books, repairing torn pages, tipping in loose pages,
tightening hinges, reattaching broken hinges, repairing simple spine damage,
re-casing books, binding pamphlets, and making simple phase boxes. This
workshop is worth one graduate credit! You must have a bachelor’s degree or
be enrolled as a Kent State University student in order to register for this

AGE MATTERS: GENERATIONAL DIFFERENCES AT WORK

employees. This interactive session will incorporate participant experiences
with the latest research on this emerging issue, leading to new perspectives
and ideas for working more cooperatively. AGE Matters is an interactive
training that encourages and facilitates intergenerational discussions
regarding workplace values/practices and the tension that often arises
between generations. The acronym AGE stands for: acknowledge differences,
generate options (for improved relations), and establish models (for working
productively). Participants will walk away with new perspectives on their
co-workers and ideas on how to work more cooperatively.


COMMUNITY CPR AND FIRST AID BASICS: PROTECT LIBRARY STAFF & PATRONS!

As a public facility, libraries are always at risk for patron medical
emergencies, especially with seniors and children. This course will help
protect your library by giving your staff the necessary skills to handle
emergencies with patrons, or even with other library staff. This course will
cover Adult, Infant and Child CPR and First Aid. The CPR portion of the
course will enable participants to recognize and care for breathing and
cardiac emergencies in adults, infant and children. The First Aid portion
will provide information on cuts, scrapes, bruises, burns and how to control
bleeding. The course also teaches participants how to deal with shock,
seizures, injuries to bone, muscles and joints, as well as poisoning. At the
end of the course participants that successfully complete all the skills and
pass a short written exam will be certified in Community CPR for 1 year and
First Aid Basics for 3 years.

Start Thinking About Retirement Today (START) is a program offered for Ohio
Public Employees Retirement System members who have less than five years of
service credit. It was developed in response to written comments -
longer-term employees who have attended our Retirement Awareness Program
(RAP) and Providing Long-term Awareness Now (PLAN) seminars. Many of these
members believe they would have benefited by having a basic knowledge of
retirement information earlier in their careers. START is a three-hour
session focusing on OPERS benefits, including survivor and disability
benefit protection, age and service retirement, calculation and benefits,
refunds and much more. A certified financial planner will discuss financial
planning, and a representative - the Ohio Public Employees Deferred
Compensation Program will talk about the benefits provided by participation
in that program.

Readers’ Advisory is a vital reference service! This workshop will cover the
tools and strategies needed to conduct an effective readers’ advisory
reference interview and examine the reading needs of your customers.
Participants in this training workshop will discuss the elements, theories
and related sources behind the readers’ advisory process. Learning
objectives include: 1) Developing an understanding of key characteristics of
quality readers’ advisory services, 2) Identifying readers’ advisory print
and electronic sources to incorporate titles into the Reference Interview,
3) Improving and enhancing usage of the Great Reads portion of the CML web
page, 4) Demonstrating concepts surrounding readers’ advisory services
through classroom exercises and post-workshop activities, 5) Evaluating
readers’ advisory collection knowledge by examining book reviews, book
discussion groups, and periodical literature. Come to this workshop and gain

than take time off?

*How should an employer handle an employee’s health insurance while on
leave? What happens is an employee does not pay his/her portion of the

decisions about ordering books with a limited book fund. Though reading
reviews are helpful, seeing the books in hand is a great benefit. Join Sue
McCleaf Nespeca, President of Kid Lit Plus Consulting, member of the 1993
Caldecott Committee and current chair of the 2003 Sibert Award, as she
presents book talks at 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. She will highlight some of
the best books on the list! Excess books will be given away at the end of
the workshop! Please schedule adequate time to review the books. A booklet
with ordering information for all books will be provided.

introduced to the three major underlying components of sustainable
communities known as the "three Es": economy, environment, and equity.
Participants will also be introduced to a variety of roles and a range of
activities that libraries can initiate or join to promote sustainable
communities.
