Systems Administrator, Harris County Public Library, Houston, Texas.

Library Environment:
Harris County, which encompasses Houston, Texas, is one of the largest urban
counties in the U.S.
The Library is a network of 26 branches and a central administative
facility.  HCPL has a collection of over
2 million items, a staff of 360, and an annual circulation of 5 million.
The
Library's IT environment includes 650 public access computers, 350 staff
computers,
60 Windows 2000 servers, 4 Sun servers (Solaris), and a growing number of
Linux servers.

Responsibilities:
The Systems Administrator manages the HCPL Horizon integrated library system
software and
central site hardware.  The SA also performs software/hardware
implementations, upgrades, and ongoing operations
of the Horizon system and software modules including circulation,
cataloging, online public access catalogs,
serials control, and acquisitions.


Education:
Masters degree in Library Science (MLS) from an ALA accredited school
preferred.
Relevant industry certification such as CCNA, MCSE, Solaris OS, or similar
Unix
administrator certification required. MLS or bachelor's degree in related
field
and relevant experience may be substituted for IT certification.

Experience:
Experience providing user support in a network environment. Experience
managing and supporting
Internet access services.  Experience managing and supporting wide area
networks and firewall
security. Experience installing and managing Unix servers.  Library
automation experience strongly
preferred (such as III, SIRSI, Horizon, Dynix).  Sybase experience strongly
preferred.

Qualifications:
Strong familiarity with TCP/IP networks and network hardware including
switches and routers
demonstrated by an appropriate combination of training and experience.
Excellent analytical
and problem-solving skills demonstrated through successful employment
history in positions
requiring such skills.  Ability to acquire Texas driver's license upon
employment and access
to a vehicle that can be used for personal transportation to library sites.

Salary:
$45,000 - $57,000 annually DOQ
