Hi colleagues:

My good friend, and ISMIR 2003 co-chair (along with Dr. Sayeed Choudhury of
Johns Hopkins), Sue Manus, has just sent out a reminder notice about early
registration for the 4th International Conference on Music Information
Retrieval. I would like to draw your attention to a tutorial (one of four) that
we will be holding Sunday, 10/26/03. While the other three tutorials are
extremely exciting (albeit somewhat specialized), the tutorial outlined below
might be of interest to those with *limited exposure* to things Music IR. So, if
you would like to learn more about Music IR, whether as a professional, a
student, or as a passing fancy, I would like to invite you to consider joining
us in Baltimore at the "Music IR 101: A Survey Tutorial".

Tutorial I
Music IR 101: A Survey Tutorial
Presenters: Joe Futrelle and J. Stephen Downie
9:30 to 12:30 p.m.

If you have an interest in Music Information Retrieval (MIR) but do not know
where to start, then the Music Information Retrieval 101: A Survey Tutorial is
for you. This introductory tutorial is designed specifically with the learned
layperson in mind and will provide a "big picture" overview of the exciting
developments being made by MIR researchers from all around the world. The
tutorial is intended to encourage and support the ongoing participation in MIR
research and development of those with librarianship, business, computer
science, engineering, musicological, etc. backgrounds. Participants will acquire
a clearer understanding of the major research areas being explored in MIR. Music
Information Retrieval 101 is being held prior to the main International
Conference on Music Information meeting so newcomers to MIR research can gain a
stronger appreciation of the papers, posters and demos that will be presented.

Cheers, and hope everyone's summer is going well.
Stephen
