Catalog description: Prerequisite: 205 or Permission of the Instructor.
An introduction to the major reference works and computerized
information systems in the health sciences as well as to the
administration and organization of medical libraries. Emphasis is on the
services of the National Library of Medicine, its reference
publications, online databases, and the National Network of Libraries of
Medicine. The course may be taken for either three graduate credits or
three continuing education credits. Please call the DLIS office for CE
fees.

A background in the sciences is not required. Students interested in the
following careers should register for the course:

.	Health Sciences Librarianship: The course prepares you to work
in medical libraries of all types and sizes, ranging from small hospital
libraries to major medical centers.

.	Public Librarianship: A high percentage of the reference
questions in public libraries relate to medicine. The course devotes
substantial attention to consumer health information.

.	Corporate Librarianship: Many business librarians have to search
online databases in the field of biomedicine. This course trains you to
search these files.

.	Medical Informatics: Numerous jobs today require skills in the
organization of information (indexing; thesaurus design) combined with
knowledge of medical terminology. This course focuses on the structure
of Medical Subject Headings and related controlled vocabularies.

Course Instructor: Bella Hass Weinberg, Professor, Division of Library
and Information Science, St. John's University, has worked in three
health science libraries and has done research on physician referrals
and on medical vocabularies. She is a registered user of the Unified
Medical Language System of the National Library of Medicine. She
conducts research on medical information by consulting the extensive
resources of the Library of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine
(Bronx, New York).
